MNRF CWD surveys for deer

Two chronic wasting disease (CWD) surveys completed by Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) staff in the autumn of 2019 did not detect the disease in 452 animals tested.

Normally, the MNRF’s CWD surveillance program monitors one region per year. In 2019, however, testing was also carried out in Ontario’s eastern Wildlife Management Units (WMU) because of a CWD outbreak on a red deer farm in Quebec near the border.

Testing in WMUs 8, 9A, 9B, 10, 13, 64B and 65 found no incidents of the disease.
