Mother's Day fishing mother and daughter

Ontario residents without a fishing licence can fish for free this Mother’s Day weekend.

The annual events for licence-free fishing include Family Fishing Weekend (February 17, 18, 19), Mother’s Day weekend (May 11 and 12), as well as the upcoming Father’s Day weekend (June 15 and 16), and Family Fishing Week (June 29-July 7) in 2024. Conservation catch limits apply, as do all other rules found in the Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary. All anglers must carry government-licensed photo ID.

“Free fishing is a great way to get out as a family to celebrate Mother’s Day and enjoy our beautiful lakes, rivers and streams. Whether you’re new to fishing or have been doing it for years, what better way to kick off the spring season than enjoying fishing with family or friends,” Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, Graydon Smith, stated in a release.

Tackleshare is an Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) program supported by the Ontario Power Generation. Tackleshare loans fishing equipment to the public at more than 140 loaner sites across Ontario. Beginners can learn how to land fish via the TackleShare YouTube Channel.

Anglers contribute $1.75 billion each year in recreational fishing.
