A record 2,428 anglers registered for this year’s 35th annual Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) Under the Lock Fishing Derby, including 1,526 youth, 618 adults, and 284 school group students, organizers announced.

More than $25,000 in prizes were offered and some 3,000 trout stocked for the former Peterborough Greenwing Fishing Derby, which took place below Peterborough Lift Lock 21 on the Trent-Severn Waterway from April 28 through May 5.

Some 317 prizes were won by kids, including a grand prize fish, Rosie, caught by Natalie McCann. She won $200 and an OFAH Day Camp registration. Walter, a rainbow trout weighing between six and eight pounds, was not caught this year — meaning the $1,000 big fish prize was not awarded. Of the 34 tagged fish sponsored by local companies, 28 were caught, organizers stated.

The derby included 47 organizations and 40 volunteers. Planning for the 2025 event is already underway, OFAH Supervisor of Outreach Programs David Ryrie said.
