Although a lot of big-game hunting in the province takes place within walking distance of hunt camp or parked truck or ATV, some of us prefer to hunt away from it all. A quality pack is crucial.
The Solo 3600 is one of Stone Glacier’s most popular models, a bit of a do-anything pack that’s good for a day outing or three or four days off grid. It’s also a pretty straightforward design. We used it from last summer right through to late-season: some pre-season camping, during the deer hunt, and for an off-grid hike into a back lake we fished in fall, packing in fishing tackle, a long-handled landing net, and rods and reels.
The build
The robust and water-repellent fabric with heavy-duty zipper give a feel that this will stand up to extended use. The large, zipped opening provides easy access to the 3,600 cubic inch bag. A built-in spotting scope pocket is perfect for that or other accessories, like a packable stove and fuel. At four-pounds, nine ounces, the pack and frame are light, but have a 150-pound plus load rating, and the carryability of this pack is impressive. Heavy loads still feel comfortable and stable.
Interchangeable frames
Stone Glacier has packs designed for day use, multi-day, and expedition. All bags and frames are interchangeable, which means you can own one frame and multiple bags to switch for your hunt needs. All packs are made in the USA.
Load-Shelf
The load-shelf lets you expand the bag off the frame so you can pack out meat. Meat is kept clean and separate from the items in your bag, and the load sits closer to your core, for comfort and stability.
This adds 2,500+ cubic inches of storage.
Accessories
Stone Glacier offers a number of pack accessories for you to customize. External attachable lids and bags offer more storage and pockets and sleeves help keep you organized. We liked the Access Bag, especially in blaze orange, because we attached it to the back of the pack during the gun season, making us hunter orange compliant when the pack covered our vest. A Hydro Holster that attaches to the hip belt keeps a water bottle conveniently by your side. And a Rain Cover provides complete pack protection in the wettest conditions.
Verdict
In our many uses, the pack met all our needs. We filled it to capacity, but also used it with minimal gear. Both felt comfortable, and it handled all we tossed at it during hunts. Itʼs really well built.
