A record 3,500 pounds of salmon were weighed in at this year’s 36th annual McDonald’s Owen Sound Salmon Spectacular.

More than 5,000 anglers took part in the event held Aug. 23 to Sept. 1, while some 55,000 attended derby events held in the big tent, organizers stated. More than 5,000 pounds of salmon were consumed at two fish frys.

The winning salmon, at 24.8 pounds, was a chinook caught by Ray Hynes of Cambridge. The winning rainbow trout, at 12.72 pounds, was caught by Julien Sinclair. Meanwhile the winning lake trout, at 23.64 pounds, was caught by Madelyn Whittle. The winning brown trout, at 9.79 pounds, was caught by Steve Bowerman.

Proceeds of the derby benefit the conservation work of the Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association.
