Wetlands

Ontario is investing $650,000 to the town of Ajax to restore almost seven acres of wetlands in the Carruthers Creek watershed.

The Town of Ajax and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority is a component of the Wetlands Conservation Partner Program. This project’s focus will be removing drainage pipes previously used for agricultural purposes, return the land to a more eco-friendly and flood-friendly state.

“Urban wetlands are incredibly important to our communities — they help provide vital habitat for local wildlife, while absorbing stormwater to protect homes from flooding,” Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks Andrea Khanjin said. “We are proud to support this unique project led by the Town of Ajax to restore wetlands in the Carruthers Creek watershed which will have a lasting, positive impact on the local environment and the community.”

Ontario has invested more than $31 million in the past five years. Throughout the Wetlands Conservation Partner Program, an estimated $6 million in flooding damages has been avoided. More than 170 green jobs have been created.

“Wetlands are critical to Ontario’s environment and communities. I’m pleased the Wetlands Conservation Partner Program is helping to restore these areas all across the province. My ministry will continue to support wetland conservation partnerships to ensure these natural resources provide critical recreational and environmental benefit for generations,” Minister of Natural Resources Graydon Smith stated in a release.
