drone rules

For 2025, Transport Canada is proposing changes to the Canadian Aviation Regulations that would include routine lower-risk operation of beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) drones and the operation of medium-sized drones within visual line-of-sight (VLOS).

The proposed amendments will focus on safety, economic growth, and supporting innovation and technological advancements within the Canadian drone industry, officials stated. The changes are intended to be a boon for delivery of supplies to remote communities, first responder operations, natural resource, and wildlife surveys, and infrastructure inspection by supporting lower-risk operations of BVLOS drones. Extended VLOS and sheltered operations will enable pilots to fly drones at longer ranges, along with a trained observer, or around obstructions without keeping it in a direct line of sight, supporting building inspections or taking photos for real estate.

The new regulations would eliminate the requirement of a certificate for certain lower-risk BVLOS and medium-sized drones.
