Ontario residents without a licence can once again fish for free during the return of Family Fishing Week from June 28 to July 6, 2025.
Whether for the first time or as a longstanding tradition, it’s a chance to support local communities and embrace Canada’s angling heritage, the Ministry of Natural Resources stated on June 25.
“This week is the perfect chance to gather with friends and family to reel in new experiences and explore all the great fishing opportunities our province has to offer,” said Minister of Natural Resources Mike Harris stated. “I encourage fishing enthusiasts and first-timers alike to cast a line in celebration of Canada — the True North, strong and free, and the place we call home.”
Conservation limits in place
Anglers must observe conservation licence catch and size limits and follow fishing regulations, officials reminded. They must also carry government-issued photo ID with their name and birthdate.
Ordinarily, an Outdoors Card and valid fishing licence is required to fish in Ontario for anyone between ages 18 and 65 — although veterans and Canadian Armed Forces members are exempt.
More than one million licenced anglers spend $1.75 billion per year on recreational fishing in Ontario, officials stated. Family Fishing Week is the fourth and final free fishing opportunity of the year, after Family Day and Mother’s and Father’s days.
