Ontario Family Fishing Week kicks off on Saturday, allowing Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters licence-free.
More than 50 communities across the province will be hosting fishing derbies and other festivities to get people involved.
During Ontario Family Fishing Week, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years who would normally be required to purchase a fishing licence, can fish licence-free.
The grace period extends from July 5 to 13 and is designed to bring families together and attract new anglers. Conservation licence limits apply, as do all other provincial fishing regulations, for those taking part.
“Fishing gives families the chance to reconnect without the distractions of everyday life getting in the way,” said Angelo Lombardo, executive director of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH). “We want to encourage everyone to go fishing during Ontario Family Fishing Week to experience a healthy outdoor activity that will provide them with a lifetime of memories.”
Ontario Family Fishing Week is an initiative of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and is organized by a steering committee comprised of the OFAH, MNRF, Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association, Canadian National Sportfishing Foundation, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Ontario Family Fishing Events also runs in conjunction with National Fishing Week.
