An Information Bulletin posted on the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO) is disclosing that the Ministry of Natural Resources is proposing to amend the Crown Forest Sustainability Act,1994 (CFSA). If approved, the changes would enable the ministry to create regulations that would simplify the process for the removal of forest resources for non-forestry purposes.

Currently, a permit from the ministry is required to remove forest resources. The proposed changes to the CFSA would enable the ministry to develop a new, “more efficient ‘rules in regulation’ approach” that could be used in some circumstances. These would make the process easier for industry and remove regulatory hurdles to create roads and utility corridors and to enable mining.

Future regulatory development is still required. Those that are environmentally significant will be posted on the Environmental Registry of Ontario for consultation.
