The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) will be conducting its Chronic Wasting Disease Provincial Surveillance Program again in two regions during the firearms season for deer.
In northwestern Ontario, wildlife technicians will be testing harvested deer in wildlife management units (WMUs) 8, 9A, 9B, 10, and 13.
In eastern Ontario, the MNRF will be carrying out a comprehensive chronic wasting disease monitoring surveys in WMUs 65 and 64B. The testing in eastern Ontario is in response to CWD cases that were detected in September 2018 on a farm in the Gatineau/Hull region of Quebec, less than 20 kilometres from Ontario. Nearly 3,000 captive cervids were culled at that time.
CWD not detected
This provincial CWD program is part of an MNRF plan first conceived in 2002.
Since the program began, more than 13,000 animals have been tested and the disease has not been detected.
