A reader asks if they can pursue coyote with a shotgun and coyote tag if they are with a person deer hunting with a tag during the bow season.

What can I but enumerate old themes,
First that sea-rider Oisin led by the nose
Through three enchanted islands, allegorical dreams,
Vain gaiety, vain battle, vain repose,
Themes of the embittered heart, or so it seems.

After a lot of people arguing about this being a "gray area", and it's not, its good to see a CO provide a clear and unambiguous response. Thanks for posting.

Same here, I assumed it to be the usual question: can I coyote/turkey hunt while I am deer hunting and have tags for both. The key to understanding the answer to the above question was on my second read, the coyote hunter did not state to have a deer tag, which in hindsight the answer is obvious.

We've had some rippin' discussions among our crew over this very subject for many years, now. We deer hunt WMU 73.....shotguns only-no dogs. Other than the gun hunt for deer,we're allowed centerfire rifles no larger than .275 for small game, however,Bear season runs concurrently and being classified as BIG game, the .275 rule doesn't apply. Does that mean that a hunter without a Deer license and tag hunting Bears or small game (Wolves/Coyote) may use a centerfire rifle? NOPE! They must use only a shotgun (or archery gear) during the gun hunt for Deer for hunting all species. This is very difficult concept for some folks to wrap their heads around and invariably, every year,we hear or know of hunters who have landed in some very hot water.

    Pretty simple concept( i think).

You have a tag for deer-you can deer hunt. WITH the firearm of the season(archery-archery/rifle-rilfe,shotgun-only shotgun)when the given season is open.
You can"downgrade"if you wish (shotgun in rifle season-if regulation allows in that WMU the shotgun use)but you can not "upgrade".

Now-if you do not own a deer tag- do not be out there ,with a firearm of choice,in "any Fiream season" for deer.
    Archery season-OK.
    Same goes for moose/elk/bear seasons.

Even the regulation stipulates this very clearly.-pg 46.pg 58,pg 75, pg 79(specificly detailed one ...)and pg 85(for the coyote "debate")

When it comes to interpretation of "party "hunting -there lies the devil...best not to do it ,in "overalpping"conditions.
