There are many references to "French Fries " by going to google, and there is absolutely no reference to the origin you mention [most likely an old wives tale]

Cancer killed both my parents and many aunts and uncles. Took a good friend of mine and long time Beagler last year. Let's not wish that on anybody. I would like to see Wynne and her gang in jail though.
