I have long held a belief that a lot of students can't master ONE language. Trying to force them to learn 2 is a no go in my opinion.
I agree. We have friends who put there two kids through French Immersion and they said all it does is to allow the kids to graduate illiterate in two languages instead of one. They were frustrated by the lack of quality teachers on the french side of things. According to them there is just a lot less of a pool of them to draw from than english speaking teachers.
I really think that the sysem is losing sight of the fact that the french immersion program was originally introduced to give access to french language education for those in Ontario who prefer to speak french. While I agree it never hurts to speak a second language I really think this french immersion program has taken on an elitist attitude. I'm sure there are areas of the Province where learning french may be beneficial later in life but here in Southern Ontario I have yet to here from anyone I've known that not knowing french has been an obsticle. My wife worked for the Provincial Ministry of Health for 12 years and I can assure you that in this area her fluency in German did far more to further her career then knowing french would have.
