Thread: Teens Drifting On Ice Floe Are Totally Ungrateful During Rescue In Peterborough

They're kids. Kids often get off with stern warnings where adults would be charged. No one was hurt and the rescue service got some practice.

And here I thought law enforcement had no "common sense" anymore? In fact just this past fall I recall a thread where a member was quite angry he was fined when he thought he should of just been warned by a CO. Bit of a double standard, no?

Those kids are just plain lucky. They weren't local kids,so,they have no clue what they were in for. That section of the Otonabee River is deeper than most of the rest. There's control dams at various intervals that feed generating stations along the river. The currents and undertows are incredible. Anyone falling into that section have a ZERO chance of survivability. All of us local kids knew NOT to tempt fate. The river has killed a lot of people over the years.

There would be no point to fining the parents.....It would mean nothing to the kids. Thanks to the young offenders act they know they are pretty much untouchable. The endangered themselves and wasted valuable resources and put others in harms way??? For what?

You can't blame the parents for what they did. They look old enough to know right from wrong. Lets put the blame where it belongs, right on those two idiots.

But I guess if I stop and think about, I too was one of those idiots way back when... certainly not my parents fault. Only difference now, more video cameras and youtube...

    Still idiots though..

It's not illegal to do something stupid unless it directly endangers someone else.

Four of us used to ride ice flows every spring when I was a teen in Ottawa, 35 years ago
Two of us just rode ice in Black Rapids Creek which is no more than 20 feet across so no big issue to swim out ( I never needed to).

But the other two once did a ride down the Rideau River and got “rescued” including front page pics in the Ottawa Citizen.
One of them is a doctor in Northern Ontario and the other became a General in the Canadian Army.
