Ok so approximately half the moose tags are not claimed. A lot of the tags are in the most northern units.
In theory only half the number of moose should be harvested.
After 3 years there should be an increase in the moose numbers.
If the herd in Ontario hasn’t grown is it the hunters causing the decline.
What are your thoughts

The areas where moose populations are low, majority of the tags are getting accepted if not all. So I don't think unclaimed tags will have any impact on moose populations as a whole. And the zones that are far north where tags are unclaimed like 1C and 16C from my experiences wont matter cause most are cows and calves unclaimed and the bull harvest isn't going to change in those areas where fly ins are the norm. Guys are mainly after bulls in the peak rut up there.
Lots of moose where I hunt and is a area with a ton of tags given out.
It is comical to me if you are correct saying half the moose tags in Ontario go unclaimed why so much crying people cant get tags.

I feel like it could have negative effects if they just give out the tags to heavily hunted area's . They are basing the unclaimed tags and the population of moose as a whole.

As for the population and tag things I've seen mixed numbers depending on the article. From 97 thousand to 67 thousand for the heard and want to give away 3000 to 4500 as they are unclaimed.

If the heard is not growing and they want more moose taken it will shrink for sure.

The moose population will never increase dramatically again in road accessible areas. Access is the elephant in the room now. There is no good way forward for moose management that doesn’t include closing roads and restricting motorized vehicles over large areas

They do head counts every 10 years, any growth or decline in population conversations would not be based on any empirical data.

In general however, I kinda think that new system will have good results eventually

The point system is all about the distribution of tags to those who have waited the longest. The point system has nothing to with how the MNR comes up with tag numbers. All things being equal, if Unit X had 200 bull tags available in the old system, then it would have 200 bull tags in the new (point system). The point system won’t grow the moose herd any quicker than the old system.

As an aside, managing the harvest will only go so far in growing the herd. Other things need to improve as well.

X2- i am on the opinion for the longest time,that ATV use increased the moose harvest dramatically.
Other then the non regulated harvest-the road acess is the bigest problem.

If they would want to entertain limit ATV use-do as Alberta did.

NO firearm on ATV til noon.Period.

If one harvests an animal,and needs ATV for retrieval they can do so .If one wants to go in "deep"they can do so.
But no to ATV road hunters.
