    The article misses an important point - probably the most important point about winter feeding deer.

    If you wait until the deer are in trouble, it's too late to help them with supplemental feeding - other than cutting trees so they can feed on the tops.
    Related to that, the best strategy is to start feeding early - the start of December - and keep them in good shape for as long as they keep coming to the feed - for me, that is usually the end of January. A deer in good shape can survive up to 90 days with no/poor feed - that will get them through to the end of April.
