Some might remember this car of mine eh Bushmoose

Well some on here might remember back in 2010 my firewood pile dropped on the car I had bought my wife. A pile of wood almost 7 ft high. Well my wife did drive that car until about 2018 or so and we had put well over 300,000 on it. No I didn't drop another wood pile on it, I have a wood shed now.

I parked the car when I got my wife another car with AWD. Anyways the car sat in my drive way until Aug of last year when I gave it to my son. Only needed a new battery, starter, plugs and rear shocks. Anyways about 2 weeks ago my newly licensed 17 year old son made a mistake when driving. Luckily no one was hurt except my son's wallet and his pride.

My son called me at 11:00 AM while I was at work my family knows never call me text me unless there is a real issue cause when I look at my phone and someone is calling me when they should not be I think the worse and this time I was right, my son had been in accident and worse at fault. When the accident happened he called for help first on his cell so the police told me. They also had told me everyone was ok. The police did mention to me that after my son heard everyone was OK they noticed he was more upset about his car than his self. I think my son has inherited my life problem about never worrying about yourself just others and the things around you.
I'm thinking and probably correct is he was also worried and that I would flip and blow out but I didn't told him it was a lesson learn and that nobody including himself was hurt. Told it him it was no big deal to me that the car was gone, but did tell him he will need to buy himself another one (he has the money but won't meet his final goal) but the big problem was not the cost of the car but the cost of his insurance. He will be buying another car once I can find a decent deal and I will but told him it could be tomorrow or in a few months as it takes time we missed one good deal but there will be others.

I also had some more chats about how to be safer, more attentive when driving and since he has no car been letting him drive my car for more training with me (He did take drivers ed but accidents do happen). To be honest I had the exact same accident with my Honda Civic wagon when I was 19 lucky for me it never went through insurance (Like father like son).

Anyways he is a bit in better spirits but now has to work more and picking up more hours at the farm when he's not at the grocery store to try and recuperate what the car is going to cost him and the fact his insurance could double from 140 to 280 or even 300. His financial goal was to have enough money to attend college and put 6500 in a TFSA.

He knows he made a mistake and was quick to also realize his mistake has repercussions. He doesn't know it but to soften the blow I will pick up his some of his costs but won't tell him. I am a strong believer in helping if the person first tries to help themselves.

That's quite a story GW. I had forgotten all about the woodpile incident! I was prepared to let sleeping dogs lay, but you just had to bring it up again?
Glad to hear your son is ok aside from his pride and bank account? I was 17 once, a long time ago.... crap happens.

Sometimes you have to make mistakes for yourself to learn. Luckily everyone is ok and time to move on and be safer.

These lessons make you stronger,
I had an accident at 18 I had to pay cash to fix. Lost my truck and maxed my credit card to avoid doubling my insurance. I see insurance rates are better for young men these days, almost 20 years ago my rate was $360/month for liability only.

I think just about all of us has had that day.

Mine was when I was 16, looked down the the radio, and then plowed my mums 3 year old Toyota into the back of a van....

As long as your son's ok, its a tuition payment...he'll learn from it.
