Trapping coyotes?

Have written permission from a landowner/farmer in southern Ontario WMU 78 , to be his agent or however you want to word it ,to kill coyotes on their property . I’m wondering am I allowed to use leg hold traps to trap and kill coyotes ? Or do I need to take a trapping course in order to be able to trap on this farm . They almost killed his dog a few nights ago so there is definitely the potential for damage to his property it’s also an orchard and yes they eat a lot of his apples . Or is my only option finding a licensed trapper ?

Pretty sure you have to be a licensed trapper to use a leg hold. Besides shooting them, not much you can do yourself regarding trapping them on your own without a license. If I am wrong someone will correct me.

And trapping isn't all that easy either, I tried it a few times with no luck with that being said, I am sure there are some great trappers out there that will be able to help out.

I'm pretty sure you need to take the course and get a trapper's license. Stick with the tried and true......bang flop unless,of course,you really want to get into to trapping.

IMHO trapping will be only way I can put a dent in them , shooting the odd one does not seem to do anything . Contacted a trapper in Elmira that offers courses ,awaiting a response , if I don’t hear from him I guess I’ll start looking for courses further away. Does anyone know of a trapper in the Peel/Dufferin area ? Don’t know if they charge by the property or coyote ?

Coyote trapping is heavily regulated in Ontario. Cannot use a snare that closes enough to kill them, snare cannot be close enough to any branch etc that could cause entanglement. Foot traps have to be the rubber coated ones that do not cause injury or breakage in case wrong animal (farmer's dog etc) gets in it. And you definitely cannot trap without a licence. You can contact the ministry for nuisance trappers in that area, but there is typically a cost or trade-off such as hunting rights which I am guessing you would not want.

I wanted to get into trapping for the same reason the OP is having. Im surprised they don't offer a course online ?

A good part of the course is hands on.
Skinning and fleshing certain animals, setting traps, and more.
Doing some of the physical parts of trapping while being immediately supervised to offer tips on doing correctly and safely.

Keep in mind that if you elect to get your licence that you have to be able to check all your sets on a daily basis, preferably first thing in the morning. This is tough to do if you’re remote from the property and have other job commitments. You would want to find an experienced canid trapper to mentor you until you’re able to make your own catches. Lots to learn and very easy to make little mistakes that result in zero catches. I rank them ( and wolves) as the toughest ontario furbearer to master as a trapper, especially if suspended kill snares are not an option. It’s pretty rewarding when you finally do everything right and begin to consistently catch coyotes. Amazing animal. As smart as a Crow!

Looks like two courses are planned fot the 519 area. Bill Davies in Watford 519.849.3275 and Rob Gurney in Brantford 519.770.6866
