    Default False identity?

I just want to pass on some info that I'm in the middle of at the moment. A few weeks ago my credit union sent out an advisory that their IT system may have been compromised. They sent each possible affected member a free 2 year subscription with one of the leading Credit Bureau firms here in Canada, so we can check and monitor our credit records.
Sure enough, after I went on last evening, I see some activity that took place last summer about a credit card that was cancelled and sent to collection. There was also a false phone number and address associated with this that was never mine, nor did I ever live at the phony address and further, it certainly was not my credit card! The credit rating I have is down as poor now, according to the report. I'll be getting in touch with them first thing Monday to see about having this info stricken from my file, but somehow, I think I'm in for a battle?
So a heads up to everyone, it might be a good idea to look into your personal credit records/score. I had no idea before yesterday!

    Wow. That sucks.
I never check my credit rating, maybe I should.
    Thanks for the heads up.
    Good Luck.

Regularly checking your credit reports and credit scores is an important way to ensure your personal and account information is correct, and may help detect signs of potential identity theft.

I, as well as numerous others I'm sure, neglect to check. BIG MISTAKE! My battle is just starting. The police have been notified as well as the company who issued the card to a fraudulent person. Talking to them was a real treat. They were adamant that I was the person who applied for and received the card, until I told them the law was notified. That seemed to give them pause and they are now looking into it further.

There are a couple big ones. Google credit bureaus in Canada. Folks are allowed to get some info for free, though most of the info that is available has a price tag attached.

It seems to like it started being a standard free offering with credit cards nowdays.
RBC and CapitalOne offers a free credit check/tracking, if you are client (they both get data from Trans Union)

In my case, it is Capital One who I'm in the battle with. A card was issued in May of 2021 apparently, and it's on my file now as having been maxed out and then closed due to non-payment. Sent to collections shortly afterward and is now showing up on my report. Felonious address, felonious ph. number, etc etc... Not my card, not my address, and not my ph. number, it never was!
I cannot emphasize enough for people to monitor their affairs.
For the record, my wife and I own our home, we own our cabin property (all mortgage free) and enjoy the fruits of our labours over the last many years. Neither of us had concern over something like this to happen, but it did and now I'm fighting to have this nonsense removed entirely from the record. I've notified the law https://www.antifraudcentre-centrean.../index-eng.htm along with all other firms involved. This week has been a big pain just trying to cross all the T's and dot the i's.
