I think this system is way better than the old one. It will probably take about 6 years for all the high point applicants to get their tags but they deserve it because if they have high points it's because they waited forever to get a tag while guaranteed groups were getting them. After the 6 years it will be a much fairer system with everyone getting an equal chance. Nothing is ever 100% perfect but this is definitely better.

I do think it's a much better system, but as was mentioned it's needs to be read correctly and applied correctly and it should all work out. We are a camp full of low points guys and pulled 5 calf tags out of 8 people in camp, turning 4 back in but atleast we're able to hunt and enjoy our week and we only lost 1 point for it. And maybe hope for something in the second chance allocations but will be happy either way.

The biggest benefit to the point system is that the primary draw is predictable. The long wait times for tags in some units can be disappointing, but at least hunters know where they stand.

Here is my advice: The keys to the point system is thinking long term and saving points. You also need to figure out what tags are important to you. If you really want a bull tag, but keep accepting something else in the primary draw, then you will never get that bull tag. Point requirements might be less for cow/calf tags so consider that as an option. Groups need to think hard about the tags that they need and ensure that they don’t accept more tags than that. Try to form a group size that meets or exceeds the point requirement for a bull tag e.g. group of 5+ where 5 points are needed. This will practically ensure that you get a bull tag every year. Save your points and leave your first choice in the second draw blank… second and third choices don’t burn points! In areas with long wait times, ask yourself why you hunt there. If you never get a tag and the odds of actually harvesting a moose are low then consider hunting where the odds are better. Or, save up some cash and consider a fly-in trip every second or third year… the comfort, higher success rates and bonus fishing is worth it!
