moose hunt 18B

Hello all,
so trying to decide which wmu to apply for moose hunt this year, with limited points.

I came across 18B, which seems to have alot of available tags and low point requirements. [for bull gun]

I think there must be a reason for this, any idea why ?! no moose or no access ?

I have my truck atv and canoe with a small engine so hope I can get further into the unit taking the rivers.

any info would be appreciated. please feel free to PM me as well.

Not a lot of road access in that unit.

Second Sam-other then no roads ,lots of hunters concentrate in one small area due a lack of acess.
Where you can go-many will go.
The land is wet ,mucky,and hard to acess,even when You can do so with ATV.Argo maybe would be better-but i have seen hunters with Argo burning gas with no result.
Not much new clear-cut.Limited visibility .
I was there 2 x ,i would need to think really hard to go there once more.
I know a group,which one few years back got a bull there-like 12 hunters ,and a week hunt on Muzzle-loader hunt.
I always think like this: 7 x 12 x 2= 168 hunts = 1 moose.
If You will be alone or few guys only-make your math.
The Ministry closed down some great areas around the old Airfield-some better,accessible areas are now "useless".

You may try to go down the Pagwa too-but that is something else,and not for many.
Your choice............

Google is your friend.Just spend some time on search.

The river is nice and wide,but shallow,and once-way back,when i did the same thing as you do now-enquiring here about 18B-i got a nice forum member giving me some insight.
If the water levels are pretty good-you can make it down,but if You got lucky getting a moose,coming upriver in a shallow rocky river is no fun.No good boat and good motor-lost of challenges.He said-he has heard moose going bad due of delayed extraction.
Anyway-go Google maps and look at the river. You will see the river width ,the bends ,shallows , shoals ,and rapids.
I was looking hard to do the canoe trip-but no courage to do it(plus ,no partners at the time to do it)I would say,you will need at least 2 canoes(or boats with shallow water capabilities) motors,4 people ,and likely 2 weeks. To make the huge effort worthwhile.
It will be adventure for life if you do it,for sure.Getting a moose will be the bonus.

There was a guy on the forum, Alfoldivandor, that hunted WMU 25 in December last year. He would have driven through 18B to get to where he was going. He may have some advice. I think he was looking for a partner as well.

Yes I was there last December alone ...
and the prospect hunting partner failed the exam ...
So our group still have just two solid members for now ...

based on last year success, I see 18b gets more hunters, both success rates some-what similar.

WMU Year hunters bull harvest cow calf total % success.
18B 2021 334 13 9 1 23 7%
25 2021 202 11 1 0 12 6%

but alot more tags available in 18B in 2022 :
18B 86 87 46 11 10 240
25 36 49 33 N/A N/A 118

I wish I could just drop everything and go hunting all the time. but gotta keep wife and work happy also to let it happen.
