No More Math Testing for Future Teachers
A true indication that political correctness, or WOKE, has gone totally nuts. Your kids will NOT be getting teachers in the future that have proven they had math skills to teach them...at least not 'racialized' teachers.
I thought when they announced this Math Test requirement for teachers was a great step forward to ensuring our kids had a better chance of a good education, especially, when being required to pass 'Standardized Testing' along the way.
Have to read it to believe it:
As part of a 2019 plan to improve Ontario students’ dismal scores on standardized math tests, the provincial government instituted a mandatory math proficiency test for new teaching graduates.
The test didn’t require teachers to be serious mathematicians, but they did need to get 70 per cent on the test, which measured math knowledge and teaching strategies and covered Grade 3 to Grade 9 math.
Something similar is required in countries such as the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, several states in the United States, Japan, Singapore and China.
The teaching students formed a group called the Ontario Teachers’ Candidate Council and took the matter to court.
They found an oblique, and ultimately successful, way to overturn the test. Instead of attacking the concept directly, the teachers’ l
awyer argued that the test violated the Charter rights of “racialized” students because they didn’t pass at as high a rate as white students. Black and Indigenous students were particularly affected, the Divisional Court was told.
Earlier in December, the court ruled in favour of the student teachers, saying “Racialized teacher candidates have gone through an education system in which they have suffered discrimination and disadvantage.”
The results of the first math test show that 70.3 per cent of Black teacher candidates and 71.4 per cent of Indigenous candidates passed. The pass rate for white candidates was 90.5 per cent.
The ruling also stated “racialized students benefit from being taught by racialized teachers.” The three-judge panel concluded that this advantage was so great that it outweighed the benefits of teachers having to prove they have a reasonable familiarity with math and how to teach it.

Ignoring a problem does not make it go away.
We are in dire need of a new education system. The one we have now is dumbing down society.

Sorry-talkig from experience :
I am from Europe, educated in 70-80.
Came to Canada in 90 ish.
My daughter was educated here.
My brother's kids were educated back home.
There is a DAY and NIGHT difference between those kids.To the benefit of the Europeans.
Now-while i do realize,we do not need to know"everything"what they were teaching us/them back home-this system in North America is a shame, and dumbing down the society is already accomplished.

That's is very true. I spent 4 yrs in Germany and know first hand their kids are better educated. Their education is tailored to their strengths and they produce very skilled tradesman etc.

Pretty sure that's the plan. Kids handling financial transactions in stores these days are pathetically poor in basic math skills like figuring out change to give when cash is used.

Terrible but unsurprising.
The day will come when ordinary, sensible working people will have had enough of this. It won’t start in Canada but hopefully we’ll have the sense to recognize it and join.

We have a PM that thinks balance budget themselves and doesn't think about fiscal policy and has doubled the deficit.... math seems to be their enemy!
