Air Canada suspends more than 800 employees
ERIC ATKINS
TRANSPORTATION REPORTER
PUBLISHED YESTERDAY
More than 800 Air Canada employees are suspended without pay for not getting fully vaccinated against COVID-19, in accordance with government and airline rules.
Michael Rousseau, chief executive officer of Montreal-based Air Canada, said on Tuesday almost all the airline’s 27,000 pilots, flight attendants and other employees have had both shots. “Our employees have done their part, with now over 96 per cent fully vaccinated,”
Mr. Rousseau said. “The employees who are not vaccinated or do not have a medical or other permitted exemptions have been put on unpaid leave.”
Employees of Air Canada and other Canadian airlines must be fully vaccinated by Oct. 30 or face layoff and possible firing, according to rules imposed by the federal government.
WestJet Airlines Ltd. said on Monday almost 300 of its 7,300 employees are suspended for not getting both immunizations, which reduce the chances of becoming seriously ill from the virus that has killed about 29,000 people in Canada since the onset of the pandemic in March, 2020.
Leisure airline Transat AT Inc. suspended 18 people on Nov. 1 for not getting the shots, most of them flight attendants, said Christophe Hennebelle, a spokesman for the airline that employs 2,000.
Air Canada employees who do not get vaccinated face unpaid leave and possible termination, the airline said. The number suspended could change as people get their shots, said Peter Fitzpatrick, an Air Canada spokesman.
The government requires airline and railway passengers to show proof of vaccination as of Oct. 30. Railway employees are also required to be vaccinated. The moves are intended to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and safely reopen travel and borders. Canada’s borders are open to fully vaccinated travellers, but they must also provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before boarding the flight or crossing the land border.
Acceptable tests include the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test but not rapid antigen results.
Air Canada’s Mr. Rousseau said the airline is committed to implementing the measures intended to protect the health and safety of employees and travellers. “We do believe, however, that with the combination of the new travel policy and high vaccination rates for the general public, the predeparture PCR test is unnecessary and we will continue to advocate for its elimination,” he said on a conference call with analysts to discuss the airline’s third-quarter financial results.

You love all these suspensions
It's like you have a fetish for controling people. You always have.
It's actually Sad when so many people are being forced into something they don't want. It's a shame many of them would have to take it so they can keep their house or careers.
For something that's new without taking the proper testing. Just take it and see what happens. No thanks
What about all the people who have had this virus already what is the logic in it ?
Both Pfizer and AstraZeneca added neurological side effects the other day.
What's even funnier is we had a paid procedure done in the thick of the lockdowns. We have pumped thousands into dentist office that works directly with your mouth all the germs and not once did they ask if they are vaccinated.
But if you want to do something for fun or enjoyment you need a shot so you can still spread the virus freely.
It's a shame so many people don't really have a choice so many people can't afford to walk alway.
It's funny I'm not aloud to sit in a restaurant but if I wanted to work as a Waiter in that restaurant it wouldn't be a problem if I was unvaccinated.

Fishfood, sadly some sickening individuals get themselves off by seeing others suffer immensely.

This is the issue that is being addressed by the federal regulations. If passengers are required to be immunized to fly then the people working in the cockpit and cabin need to meet the same standard.

The entire thing is a problem if a third of vaccinated has the same viral load as the unvaccinated.
We will create a burden in our health system and many other sectors of government run things such as the bus transportation. Hundreds of busses cancelled as the driver put on suspension .
Not all the health care are willing to put this into their body either leaving the medical field suspectable to collapse this winter.
An ER doctor left one hospital for another in the state's.
We have successfully divided the people.
The freedom of choice to what goes into someone's body before the trials are even completed.
Remember 1 in 5200 people has had a serious adverse reaction to get what we have within the fully vaccinated group. So anything with a risk should not be forced into people.

Skip the Vaccine passport joke and go back to testing everyone again who wants to travel or just adapt to living with the virus in our midst. Like we're going to end up doing anyway.

1) Booster shot is not a definite ... only proposed for the most vulnerable. It is yet to be seen whether vaccine efficiency to prevent SEVERE ILLNESS perpetuates or requires a booster.
2) Testing should not be required for fully vaccinated, in fact there is discussion to drop testing for travelers returning to Canada who are fully vaccinated. Testing would only be necessary if someone is experience symptoms of COVID ... so there is knowledge of interaction with others, and I'd say mostly to protect the unvaccinated.
3) Hospitalization rate of unvaccinated is approximately 35 times higher than vaccinated. 35 TIMES!!! That's insanely higher odds! But, none the less, the vaccine was never declared as being a cure (100% effective).
4) Masks and social distancing are in practice pretty much to protect the unvaccinated and most vulnerable.
5) Ontario's numbers are WAY down ... everyone predicted a huge rise in COVID due to the colder weather ... assuming the vaccine was ineffective. WRONG! We have avoided a lock down ... so this is complete BS.

Some facts you forgot...
1. Boosters already been done in some provinces and around the world..already determined it's required.
2. With vaccinated people becoming infected..more testing will be required, not less.
3. Have to look at reality..only 3 patients in Hospital, 1was fully vaxxed, and 2 aren't..don't make 35% sound like its a huge number.
4. Masks and distance is still applicable to everyone, especially to the fully vaxxed who 'think' they're immune but statistically, 30% (60% in some counties ) of them are also infected.
5. Our numbers are down because we've achieved 'Herd Immunity'...too few people left unvaccinated to matter.
