You got to love the media. It's election day in Canada and MSN runs the store of a mass shooting at a Russian university:

MOSCOW (AP) — A gunman opened fire at a university in Russia on Monday morning, leaving eight people dead and 24 hurt, officials said.

The perpetrator used a gun designed to fire non-lethal rubber or plastic projectiles, the university press service said. Such weapons can be modified to fire other ammunition. State news agency RIA-Novosti cited local officials as saying the gunman owned the weapon legally.

Apparently such weapons (likely a handgun) are in wide distribution by the black market. They really don't have to be modified to be deadly. One woman picked such a gun up to have in her hand bag in case she encountered muggers.

The media are really having fun with the Russian university shooting. Who do you suppose this comment is directed at:

News reports cited officials as saying the suspect had a permit for a pump-action shotgun, although it was not clear if it was for the weapon used (So why bother to raise the issue if you have nothing conclusive?)
