Thanks for all the info guys. We don't really need the money but I'm sure it would be put to better use in our hands than the banks, regardless of the amount.

If you login into your CRA account they keep checks forever and if you ever forgot to cash a check from the government as for back as 30 years (maybe further) they will still have it for you.
