I wonder how the the teachers unios will respond...can you walk a picket line while social distancing ? Does that leave a big enough gap to drive thru HaHa..

Part of that plan is having a teacher at the front of the class that reflects the the make up of the school. Admirable but unfair. So if a school has 80% black students there will be adjustments to the staff to reflect that. So in many cases your merit for the position, will not be your seniority, but it will be the colour of your skin. Some schools in Markham Ont. have 90% Asian students, so to fulfil the ratio, 90% Asian teachers needed. Will that rule be also followed in Wawa, if the school is 100% white, no minorities need apply? What union would agree with that?

Sort of like artificially promoting gender equality by making the cabinet 50% women...that's a very sexist thing for a feminist to do ..hypocrisy at the highest level of government.

Any kind of affirmative action is wrong, as is seniority for determining the 'best' candidate for the job. In a Union, seniority doesn't translate to experience. A teacher with 10 yrs teaching grade 3 should not be able to use seniority to secure a teaching position for grade 8 math over of a teacher with more appropriate education but only 5 yrs experience.

My wife was the union rep for the Nurses union...she has seen a lot of really bad job placements in our hospitals done due to seniority over merit. That nurse taking care of your loved one is not necessarily the best nurse for the the job.

It's a bad policy and long outlived it's intended purpose.

Well, I asked you to define rich ... and then even the super rich ... that's a social class too, and you're painted them with one stroke of the brush ... it simply isn't the way it works. The super rich also pay taxes ... corporations, people ... some are doing things illegally, or finding grey areas ... to be honest, if it's a loophole in the tax law, it's not their fault ... it's the goverments fault for not closing the loop! If I could find a way to LEGALLY pay less taxes ... in a heart beat I would do it ... and so would everyone on this site.

You make good points Mike but something about the change rubs me wrong. The whole reason for the change is to to make it easier for principals to hire fast during this pandemic time. Favourtism is going to be a big problem.

As I said in the other thread Sharon, the Union is still there and the grievance system will prevent abuse. The Principals, may sign off on a decision, but they have little input during the vetting process.

I thought in places with Unions ....jobs are posted internally first and vetted with HR before they are sent to the supervisor for interviews.

Are retired teachers still union members? If they are not, how can a retired teacher grieve anything. Unions only represent their members?

If the teachers felt seniority were that important they would have demanded in their contract negotiations. Only OECTA did.
