insect repellent for dogs?

Does anyone know of a Insect repellent safe for dogs? I took mine out today for his first big woods off leash experience and was immediately swarmed by them. It bothered him but he still had a fun time. I didn't want to spray him with the one I was using because I didn't know if it was safe for dogs. The brand was Great Outdoors.

There are a few products used for Horses that can be found at TSC etc that are OK for Dogs. They contain an ingredient called 'Permethrin' and safe for animals but not labeled so in Canada, but it is in the states.

Anyway most people buy the product 'Ultra Shield...but it's a little stronger (.05%) than you need, so as an alternate you can buy Permethrine products with .01% .

In regards to a more long lasting (full season protection) you could look into something like Advantix (exterior) or Bravecto (oral)

Just don’t use permethrin around cats. It’s highly toxic...

DO NOT ! I repeat... DO NOT use any Deet type product on your pets ! It may be safe for humans but not for animals. If and when I use a Deet based product I make sure it goes on my clothes and not my skin. Years ago on a Spring Bear hunt we used a lot of that spray because of Black flies and found it melted the varnish right off the wood stocks on our guns. When Turkey hunting I spray it around where I'm sitting but not on me and found it killed all the weeds(ground vegetation) after a few days. My dog has had her Lyme vaccine and is on NexGard Spectra which is a Heartworm/Flea/Tick prevention medicine taken orally once a month. Brush the dog good afterwards to help remove Ticks and don't be surprised to still find some on him or you.

Thanks for the replies guys. I will be checking out the products you mentioned MikePal. I was thinking along the lines of a product that could be sprayed on a harness or something that would keep the bugs off him. I'm gonna speak to my vet and ask around the pets stores.

I use advantix and diatomaceous earth. Diatomaceous earth is all natural, it can be purchased at any local co-op. Farmers feed it to young calfs with the scours and other digestive issues. It also can be 100 percent safely applied to your dog's coat to repell fleas and ticks as well as your hunting clothes as I use it on mine for turkey season and haven't had a issue since I've been using it. As well people spread it around their vegetable gardens to repell other bugs.

I agree, while doing grass cutting and weed eating the arms of my safety glasses literally melt and break apart just from bug spray on my head. Wouldn't have believed it until it happened several times.

Avon's Skin So Soft use to be in high demand as a bug repellent . Not sure how safe it is for dogs ?
