Spring hunt in May is even sooner. Spent all day Sunday on the sled ice fishing and scouting a new area and cutting shooting lanes. The new area is off an old unmaintained logging road the provides access to a put in for the canoe. Than 5-6k to where I plan on hunting. I checked it out last summer and made it to the put in with my truck but had 3x 14-18 inch deep water crossings that might be an issue this spring. The road is rough and it took a full hour to travel 7k on it. Worst case scenario I'll trailer my backhoe up and I'll make it to the put in with that (makes loading the bear a whole lot easier as well) . Sure is a lot faster and easier to get there on the sled:



Mike and Skeeter - thanks for the links! I mix my own and most of my ingredients are the cheapest to get directly from the feed mill but the cheapest I could find jujubes was $1.80/pound. The gummie bears they listed are just under $1.00 per pound. I don't use much of them as they are the most expensive (and sought after) part of the mix. Last years recipe per batch was as follows:

120 kg (275 lbs) of whole corn - $30.60
20 kg (44 lbs) of molasses - $13.20
6 kg (13lbs) of jujubes - $24.00

Total of 146 kgs (332 lbs) of bait for $67.80 or $0.464/kg or $0.204/lb. Replacing the jujubes with gummie bears will save me $12.00 per batch (almost 20%) and lower the cost to $55.80 or $0.382/kg or $0.168/lb.

Skeeter I have to pick those gummies up next time I'm down Niagara way so if your around I'll time it for the end of the day and than we should go out for a wobbly pop and shoot the sh__.

We have tried just about every concoction made over the years and have now settled on just cheap dry dog food and molasses, I spray anise on the surrounding trees the first time I bait but after the bait is hit dry dog food and molasses works very well

I've got lots of pop! American but pop no less.

If I miss ya we are going back north on may5 to may12 - the same place. just prepping for the fall hunt - some fishing and 4 wheelin. maybe a turkey if we locate one. a redneck week. can hardly wait!

Adding in another twist to our bear set-up. I tend to do all the work at home now in the garage so our baiting is just about effortless.

You on the other hand are still young. full of pizz and vinegar! Your brain hasn't caught up with your back. YET!
