Many of us "grew up" with the Hip.
From our college days listening to the raw edge of Up to Here, and Road Apples......and then a more refined sound ( and more refined us), with Fully Completely, Trouble at the Henhouse, ....and onwards.
Many of us on here are rural, or have an affinity for the country....a muse that Gord sought out often, and wrote about extensively. His lyrics spoke to us, because they were about us ( as a nation, and as individuals living here).
There will never be another Gord Downie.
"Camo" is perfectly acceptable as a favorite colour.

As a person who loves her road trips and camping, The Hip was always the soundtrack for those outings. The concert in heaven just keeps getting better...

This is where things become that much when it comes to Gord.
The Hip had hits before I was in grade school but yet I feel like I lost a relative. The songs covered generations and they will continue to cover more, my child calms to the sound of Gord Downie and that is how I like it, one of their CDs always seems to be in the car.
Gord Downie defined so much of what it is to be Canadian, patriotic without arrogance, enthusiastic and caring, trying to be better in a diplomatic way.
I am happy he is no longer in pain, sad that he is gone, will never forget what he gave us.

And then there is the "Immigrant Me" and many others just like me who only wave one flag - the one that has the red maple leaf on it - and we too feel extremely sad for losing this Canadian icon way before it was his time.
There are so many layers to Downie's poetry and artistic expression that he will never "die" anyway! There will actually be NEW fans several generations down the road!
My huge regret is that I never managed to catch The Hip in a live performance, but just like I keep re-discovering many bands from the olden days, I will be continuously rediscovering Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip for the rest of my years...
