    Default VOIP providers

Looks like I will need to get VOIP phone set up and am trying to get a handle on the quality of the calls and the better providers. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

We have teksavvy. So far, the call quality has been very good.

Based on some recommendations and research I've been using an Ooma voip phone for a year and a half now and and am quite happy. Free long distance in Canada and no more spam calls. Under $5/mo for regulatory fees and for $10 you can get tons of features and long distance for all of North America. Sound is quite good for the most part except for when I'm downloading too much and using all my bandwidth but Quality of Service (QoS) can be set up to dedicate bandwidth for the service.

    Cheers

I recently switched from Bell to Vonage. They have a $10/month promotion for the first year. So far, I have no complaints. Unlimited North American long distance, a bunch of included features. Even the full price is much cheaper than Bell. I haven't tried this one myself, but I know someone who uses Magic Jack and they say it is great.

We have them as well, unlimited calling in NA, with the DSL internet as well we are still well below what Bell would charge for just the identical internet service.

We've had Vonage for well over a year now. No issues with their service or their features. I've found the biggest factor for voip is a reliable internet connection with consistent speeds.

Ooma. Works great for us. Costco usually has their telo system on for $100, and then < $5/month.

Thanks for all the answers, really appreciate you taking the time for them. Looks like I will go ahead with a VOIP supplier.
    Again thanks!

I've been on magicjack for 5+ years.

I can't recall how much it costs as I pay 3 years at a time. I think it is about $30/year + $10/year for a Canadian number. I use it less than once per day.

    Pros:
    Cheap
Decent quality - I'd say it is somewhere between cellphone and land line quality
Free long distance in North America
    Cheap!
Voicemail is sent to you as an email. This is handy when you are away from home. If you have a smartphone you will get it right away.
When you travel, you can take it with you. Works anywhere you have internet.
    Cheap

    Cons:
No customer service, or next to it.
The odd call goes to voicemail without the phone ringing.
Call quality depends on internet service quality (this used to be an issue when I had cheap 512KBps internet, hasn't been a problem at 5MBps)
Often there is a delay, causing conversation to be cumbersome.
