truLocal warning, just got the box, everything looks great, but as a warning, they put a plastic bag with some dry ice in the box to make sure it is cold, do not stand there like some idiot (me) holding it like you would a fish fillet while looking in the box... you will suddenly feel your fingers burning (that cold!) I didn't read what it was, too busy looking, make sure to CHECK what you are holding onto, no damage but bugger that stung and it is still tender!

I also support local,just sometimes it is hard to tell.

By the way-i have bought many food items in St Jacobs market, and the only thing local about them was -they were sold in St Jacobs.
Not bashing them, they have lost of great products,but that is just the fact.

It seems the easiest Canadian made products to find are usually at the grocery store, I make a point of buying Canadian made products all the time. French's ketchup comes to mind.

The next best thing is supporting small businesses even if they don't sell Canadian products exclusively, it's hard to source most common items here, high quality hand made or custom manufactured items seem to be easier to find.

Sometimes I buy Canadian but to be honest I have found many Canadian companies ripping people off. My buddy bought two exhaust fans for his workshop he bought them in the US for all the Canadian Price including the exchange rate. The tin I purchased for my roof they want 4 X what I pay in the US for better quality.

Made in Canada is not always what you expect. I read an article a while back (and I may get some of my facts wrong here) where a product was made in Mexico or China or some other place, shipped back here then packaged. That was legal enough to label the package as made in Canada even though the actual product came from elsewhere.
But I do my thing to buy at least North American and its darn tough to get what you want. Try buying clothing or tools thats not made in China. Try finding hooks or lure making components that are not coming from China. And when it comes to this Huwaway Co. or whatever their name is to actually be considered by this present government to be allowed in our country while they hold the two hostages! You have no idea how much I burn when that comes up in the news.

Yes that is true some of the package may be made in Canada but what is in the package could be from overseas.

Same thing with Canadian wine-i think one needs 10 % of Canada grown grapes to qualify for a"Canadian "wine label or title.................no surprise so may wineyards are everywhere,some of a size of a soccer field,making a living

I don't worry as much about the technicality of it, if a company says Canadian at least you know *some* of the money/ jobs/ taxes are distributed here. It's better than nothing as far as I'm concerned. As long as people make an effort it will hopefully keep some business here. Plenty of auto companies have given me a steady paycheque over the years even if the majority of production is in other countries. The food and beverage industry seems to be very strong in Ontario the past few years as well.

(Packaging industry also employs Canadians)

It’s actually incredible how many things are NOT made in Canada. It burns me that we as a country and most of the world has outsourced just about all of our manufacturing to one region of the world in the name of cost cutting. Can we agree that most things made in Asia are cheaply made and designed to break. This is one giant interconnected snowball effect. We are polluting at record levels. How often does a cheaply made product end up in the garbage. It’s cheaper to throw out and buy new rather than fix something. I’m more than willing to buy Canadian/ North American if it’s quality. It is getting harder to find such products.

As a side note, what was the world thinking by concentrating most of the manufacturing in one area? We are now years behind if we ever wanted to setup an efficient manufacturing hub of our own. We literally handed a good chunk of power to areas we don’t necessarily trust and that have views that differ from our own. Plus all the money that filters through this area. It’s crazy how we created a Frankenstein and are now, and will be paying for it, for years to come.

Canada holds many, if not most of the natural resources required to make this cheap crap, we give it to the area you mention then buy it back in a shiny plastic package.

95% of Canadians are at fault for wanting this garbage, cheaper. We have dug the hole we live in.

I don't think you can claim that most things made in Asia, It depends on the Quality most electronics are made in Asia, My TV is 10 years old so far and still going (made in China). Tools like wrenches, pliers etc most are made in China. I have bought "Cheap" Chinese stuff and Cheap made in the US stuff. My washer and dryer made in Canada the matching set the washer broke after 5 years not repairable.

My buddy bought a pair of exhaust fans nice quality made in Canada but it was 200 bucks cheaper to buy them from the US (Why??? when they were made in Canada).

I can buy roofing metal 5 - 10 times cheaper in the US then Canada that is a considerable difference. The company I deal with their price went down in Canada ours went up.

Clothes most are made in Asia.

I disagree with the belief that all Asia products are cheap it still comes down to what level of quality you buy.

As I showed in another post....we import $57 Billion in goods from China that fill all our Box stores (Walmart, CT, Home depot etc etc.) That money doesn't stay in Canada ( a lot of them are owned by US corps). There is no Canadian economic stimulation other than low income retail jobs.

To stop buying from China would mean : NO Boxes stores No TV's No computers No smart phones etc etc....we'd be back to Bicycle ( if we could resurrect CCM ) and Mom's homemade clothes.

If you watched Dragons Den....you saw how business investments are done...find a cheap labour force to give to the biggest profit margins. Canadians are anything but cheap labour, we can't afford to have anything made here anymore ...a least not what Canadians can afford to buy.

Just a thought, but maybe greed and capitalism isn’t working the way it should, or was meant to. Maybe it’s working against us.

If we sell the resources that are required to make goods, then buy back the made goods at a higher price we lose out. We lose jobs to make the item, we create a bigger divide of the people that can afford the item, and the only ones making money are the sellers of the item. So the little guy loses, am I right?
So the equation is imbalanced and will slowly but surely lead into the negatives.
To correct the equation we need it to balance. To balance it we need to make stuff here, pay a decent wage to the workers who are making it, and the corporations have to be willing to make less profit (just less, not an elimination of profit). Turn of the century Ford comes to mind. I’m paraphrasing but old Henry said that something about building a vehicle even his employees could afford.
None of this will be easy, it will take a mental and social change of the population. Maybe we’re not ready, maybe it’s not possible, I don’t know. Maybe the system is working fine and I’m way off base.

I ordered a few things from Amazon, that I just couldn't or wouldn't get anywhere else. I felt dirty.
Other things I've tried to give the gift of a little business to those I personally know who sell things. So win/win

China is good at making tools, don't have to worry much about defective sockets and wrenches sold by Princes Auto. If it wasn't for all the cheap tools from China I would not have as many. By the way most SnapOn and Mac Tools are also made in China as well as readers etc.

Oh, I normally choose quality over cost any day .... when I have a choice. Most times I don't have a choice ... EVERYTHING might come from China for a certain type of product ... because that's all the stores will stock. I don't blame them ... if everyone just wants the cheapest thing possible, they aren't going to cater to the 2% that want quality.

In any even I think the Chinese stuff costs more .... you have to replace it 10x more ... and it is such a consumption of our time and resources, to replace, replace, replace ... gas, warranty claims, personal time .... not to mention the piles/heaps of garbage building up on our dumps ... who considers that cost?

Many goods Made in China do not even make Chinese people richer. They do got jobs,and China is booming ,people enjoy reasonably good income-they would not have so much ,as they have now.....
But the profit goes to Big Corporations, which are from all over the World.
So the US or Canadian BIG Corporations (among others)fill their pockets with US or Canadian money(after we buy their product-which was made overseas FOR THEM ,using cheap labor),with littler regards to US or Canada.

That is one of the things Trump tried to control-tax or reduce, by tariffing China goods-give us back some of the money You- Big Corporation ,made on us!

Alas all this was pushed down,marginalized or ridiculed by many(because it did not work for the BIG ones......)then the Covid did him in.

So why don't you think about the implications and impact of you decisions, I know I did and that's why I started a thread hoping a few more Canadian MADE items are sold. Not Canadian pretenders like Freedom Lures (all made in China and shipped half way around the world) and some of the other fakers but real MADE IN CANADA companies like Len Thompson or Ciscoe or Williams.

When it comes to lures and you're into crankbaits then you're right out of luck buying Canadian. Its very hard if not impossible to compete with China when it comes to crankbaits. Who in their right mind will spring for a Rapala(Finnish) at $10 a pop when you can buy something from China with a quality finish and action at $2.00 per lure?

An example would be gas engines. Although not Canadian, we are familiar with Honda engines and reliability. To be honest, I have used quite a few products with "Chinese" engines over the last 10 years and none have failed except a John Deere garden tractor with a Briggs motor that blew the head gasket twice.

The John Deere snowblower with the Tecumseh motor I have must be almost 20 years old and runs great... it cost more than the cheap ones... in the short run. The lawnmower with the Tecumseh ... it's way over 20 now!

To be honest most Canadian Website suck plain and simple. In general most Canadian Companies won't even show their prices when were talking serious prices. It is so much easier to talk to American companies then Canadian companies. When I was looking into a Solar Panel system I could not get a single company to talk to me on the phone unless I allowed a Salesman to come out and talk to me on my property. I to learn more I called a US company and spent well over an hour on the phone with them. They still spent the time with me even knowing they were not going to get a sale from me.

Heat Pumps systems same thing. Canadian companies did not want to give me a price for a specific system they wanted to send their sales people out. I did that twice and their sales people knew less then I did. If Canadian companies want my business they need to start showing it and right now I have not seen it. Even small companies same thing. I went into the Brick 2 weeks ago to buy a microwave and I spent 15 minutes waiting to be served while watch 3 sales people sitting on a couch chatting. Zero customers in the store but me. I could have order the same Microwave off Amazon for the same price and had it delivered to my door.

I have no problem buying local but I expect at the minimum as good as treatment as I received from US companies and if your going to charge me delivery first it had better be delivered to my door and second your price had better be lower then. I am not going to pay a premium to be treated poorly.

This year we purchased 90% of everything on Amazon and free delivery as well and easy to return items if they don't work, in fact it's easier just take it to the post office and send it back.

No IMHO Canadians are batting a 2 out of 10 when it comes to serving customers, they need step seriously step up their game if they want support and everyone I know is doing the same.

Bought some made in China self tapping screws at our local hardware the other day, drilled pilot holes and cringed as every one snapped off. Decide to go to bolts and nuts instead, trot back down to the hardware store where I now have to knock before entering. Lights were all off anyway and nobody home at 3 pm.
Its tough to buy local when this stuff turns what should be a simple job into a few days of frustration and nothing accomplished.

So did you go over to talk to them, I've noticed with COVID that even the stores I would get 2 or 3 people asking if I needed help they would stay clear unless I talked to them, the only exception being Canadian Tire and ACE Hardware that they still said hello and asked if I needed help.

Anyone buying anything more money than a toaster should already know a bit atleast before trusting a salesman that might have just seen the product for the first time a few weeks ago. Owners and service guys are the ones I want to talk to, unless the salesman is ex-serviceman they only know what is in the instruction book.

Also, you seem happy and proud you are making the richest man in the world secure in his spot while depriving local businesses and neighbours of income.

For the most part I agree GW.... I (used to) do lots of shopping in Ogdensburg and the customer service is always head and shoulders above what I get here in Ont.

But there are stores that surprised me over the past year or so. Home Hardware is one. Most of them are locally owned (franchises) and the staff are very professional and know their stuff . If they don't know the answer to a particular question they find the guy that can help you. I've been using the one in Brockville regularly now and stopped going to the Home Depot across the street.

Mossy, the self tapping screws snapped. The shims are rubber. Anyway, back to the store today because its now open. I stand outside, write my order down on a piece of paper, 9 pan head screws, 3/16" X 3/4 " and 9 lock nuts and hand it to the store owner. By now my glasses are fogged over from the mask, he comes back, hands me the order which now has turned into 20 pieces 1/4" x 3/4" with wrong type head, and 10 3/16" lock nuts. I don't see this til I get back home and my glasses clear up.
Drive back to the store and get 20 pan head screws to fit the 10 lock nuts. By now I don't care what he hands me.
Shopping locally in a small community can and will drive you nuts.

Yes I agree there are some exceptions like my local Home Hardware, but for many things it is becoming preferable to buy it from Amazon a budy of mine bought from Amazon a pack of sanding disc 10 bucks less then Home hardware who were also out of them.

Best buy provides delivery but you have to pick up from their store, they should be offering then at least 50% discount. Especially when Amazon will sell the same item cheaper and delivered for free. All of their site online are poor for ordering.

Buying big stuff in Canada you are guaranteed to be ripped off, roofing material so cheap in the US and so much easier to buy.
Called Ideal roofing, they won't see to me have to call Home Depot price 5X what it is in the US.

The last time I got a quote to do a roof (2010 or so), it was around $8,000.
Assuming his income is around $60,000 per year. He'll lose around 25% to income taxes

JBen, I did the roof myself, the cost I paid for the tin was 2000 the cost at Home Depot (From Ideal Roofing) was 10 grand that was just for the tin. This was only the product no labor. That is a massive price difference
Also the longest sheets they could sell me were 12 ft, I wanted 17 ft so I could do it in one sheet (The pro way not half ). The company I bought from in the US Ogdensburg can provide them up to 53 ft. Big difference. Making excuses for Canadian companies to be bad companies does fly well.

Once the Border opens again I will be purchasing my metal again from the US as Canadian Companies are not capable of providing the service unless you want to do a half job , I prefer to do it the correct way.

But with respect to cost. The US is a huge market. Scale of economies matter.
That's one reason I mentioned a truck. New trucks here cost around $70,000? And even used, a roofer here is looking at monthly payments above $600. Then there's taxes, and employee's. Building some cabinets in my garage this weekend and went shopping for plywood yesterday morning. Home Depot would have been the convenient stop but in the spirit of trying to buy from a local Canadian chain I opted for the drive to Home Hardware Building Centre. Prices were a bit more but like Mike said I also have had good customer experiences at Home Hardware.

Southern Chile aka Patagonia is analogous to coastal BC. Latitude is about the same but in southern hemisphere. Mountains and elevation are also similar. Pre-COVID it was one of my favourite vacation destinations. Great fishing on the rivers and tons of whitewater kayaking. Other than the flights cheap as well and very friendly people. Great wine areas as well if you are into that sort of thing.

During my renovation about 7 years ago I was replacing my front door and wanted a pre-hung wooden door. I shopped around in Ontario and I was amazed how expensive they were - starting at $4,500 all the way up to $9,500 and that was 7 years ago! I was talking to a guy that was doing a renovation down the street and he put me on to a door company in Seattle, WA. I called the company and ordered a mahogany 3 panel shaker door with frosted glass & matching brick mold for $2,650 USD - shipped for free anywhere in the US. I had it shipped to Buffalo and zipped across the boarder and picked it up and brought it back and paid my taxes at the boarder (no duty). All in I was under $4,000 Cdn for a door that would have cost me $5,500 - $6,500 Canadian.

I am not anti Canadian..........& I would buy Canadian all things being equal. But I definitely double check all my larger purchases before I buy to see if there are better options in the US. I am only 50min from the boarder for I can zip across and be back in no time.

Well no bears out now .... How about a Muskoka Bears review though.... I got two pair of the pyjama pants and am very pleased, I would suggest one size up since they did shrink a bit and so they are a relaxing fit. Marks sells the same type but the M.B.'s are thicker, softer and much better stitched than the ones my wife got from Marks for me last winter. Shopping from the couch does have some advantages, you don't expect them that moment and you can scout for brands not carried in the brand stores but are likely better quality, price is more obviously but 1 pair of these already crossed the free shipping line.

There's been the odd lean year for outfitters when the Cdn dollar has been higher than the greenback, then there was the cancellation of the spring bear hunt where outfitters had to return deposits and now Covid. But I'm sure they'll survive this latest kick in the butt.
Bottom line though is that by catering to the American market outfitters are bringing in new money to our economy, not just having Canadian money going in circles. That is a win win all around.

With the talk of people getting tough with China, and when I saw some saying it and I stopped laughing I went to read my email and saw Muskoka had a flash sale on, so I thought it seemed time to bring "Made IN Canada" back to the top.

I think that may would not be that bad of a thing,with many benefits:
higher prices-harder access
harder access-less wasted
less wasted-less environmental footprint to make new
better quality product-longer life span
longer life span-less garbage
domestically made product-jobs for our own
jobs for our own-improved quality of life for many
improved quality of life for many-increased domestic spending
jobs for our own-increased tax revenue for the country
increased tax revenue-less other taxes for everyone

Between cheap production rate overseas and cheap labour in Mexico (free trade decimated industry in cities like Kitchener) we will never see 'Made in Canada' goods dominate the shelves in any big box store.
