Go Leafs go (into the tank!)

They thought things were bad with Carlyle, he was the best part of their team.
I am a die hard leafs fan but I could care less if I see another game this year. I am actually glad that Rogers and Bell are teaming up to screw over the fans by making them pay another $40 a month to watch games, it makes it easier to find other things to do with my time.
As a die hard Leaf fan for many years...50 or so...I don;t even watch a complete game anymore.
I PVR the game, and check my phone app to see when any (if any) goals were scored.
I then fast forward and do my own little "highlite" thing.
The Leafs have been mostly crap for years but this year is the first I actually have no interest what so ever.
Really don't know what the answer is......there are too many areas needing a fix.
Think I'll take the wife to a dinner and movie this Saturday....now that is a first for a Saturday night!!!!!

I give up and so have most of the players by the looks of things.
In a market like Toronto with so many devoted fans it make's it hard to understand how they just can't assemble a good organization.
Pardon the pun but in the same """boat""" as FISH24/7, only been suffering a little bit longer, I haven't watched more than 5 minutes of a game since they fired Caryle, he saw what little strength's this team had ( scoring goals ) and them play run and gun hockey, not going to work in the long run but go with what you got, not what you don't have . Not sure they would fire an interim coach but he certainly isn't the answer. you have Reilly, Kessel and JVR and if you can trade the rest , well good luck because your only going to get garbage back, they have needed a big # 1 centerman for the last 10 years or more and did they go get one, no. almost every player on this team is playing out of their position, what I mean by that is Bozak at most is a # 2 and maybe even a # 3 center on a good team, on the leafs he has to be their # 1 so playing about 6-8 minutes a game more than he should be and in those extra minutes it shows why he isn't a # 1. and on down the line for 98% of the team, every one of them playing more minutes ( and making more mistakes ) than they would on any other GOOD TEAM. As you can see I'm a passionate leaf fan but they make it harder and harder ever day to even follow them let alone watch a game. they need to figure out who the best 1 or 2 GM's are and go after them, same with the new coach, figure out who you consider the top 2 or 3 and spare no money and get them, build from there. Your proud to be a member of LEAF NATION, just not proud of the product on the ice right now.
Yup. Champions are always built around focusing on their strengths while making a reasonable effort to limit their weaknesses.
The Cup winning Penguins used their overwhelming firepower and youthful endurance to overpower their opponents in long playoff grinds. They made sure they were just good enough defensively to allow fewer goals than they scored - barely.
The Cup winning Devils used their extreme physicality, defensive stars and HoF goaltending to beat their opponents into submission through long playoff grinds. They made sure they held their opponents to just one goal less than the Devils scored - barely.
Any coach/gm that builds for "balance", adheres blindingly to a "system", and is so afraid of failing at the things his team is already poor at... misses the whole point of having star players with certain talents in the first place.
As a Sens and Bruins fan though... i could not be happier that the Leafs continue to avoid putting their house in order. This rebuild could go another 15 years, easy!
If people keep buying your junk or bad food why would you change it?
At a recent Leafs/Cunucks game at the ACC, Vancouver had transportation issues and couldn't make the game.
the ref told the Leafs, to make it an official game, he had to drop the puck and a goal had to be scored. The Leafs took to the ice and were credited with a 1-0 loss after Phil Kessel scored on his own net two minutes into the third period.
The Leafs do not have a spending issue or lack thereof, they spend at or near the cap all the time. They have a TALENT issue. It also hurts when you pay a #3 or #4 blueliner $7 million a year, or 5.25 million for a guy who scored 5 goals last year (Clarkson, he does have 10 so far this season).
The issues of the Leaf franchise go far beyond talent or spending. They have an issue attracting talent which is rooted in the city itself. Players get run out of town on a rail from Toronto because the average Toronto fan thinks they are a hockey guru who can play the game better than the talent, coach better than the coach or manage the team better than the manager and they all have different ideas on how to accomplish this and they are all extremely vocal about it (I can't count how many times I would listen to AM640 back when they had a show called Leafs Lunch and the number of knuckleheads who kept saying the Leafs should give Tie Domi the captaincy when he was playing). So you now have to pay more money for sub-par talent to fill out your roster.
Personally I'm so sick of the Maple Leafs pitiful performance over the years I pay zero attention to them now, most franchises don't even start playing at 100% till they are in the play offs so that's when I start watching hockey, no fear you'll see the Leafs playing at that point. The best thing that could happen to the Leafs is another Ontario city close by gets a team, Hamilton perhaps, when people have a choice on where to go you might then see an impact on ticket sales in TO.
As someone already said the guys higher up still make the same amount of money so they could careless as fans will keep selling out the arena.
Also stated a lot of players REFUSE to play for Toronto as the fans shun the players if they have a bad game or two. Or as someone stated run them out if town.
Watch when kessel leaves watch he will do better.
the leafs just can't play well together. It's all a scattered mess.

lol thats how i feel
Toronto ticket holders are a sedated group of business men that the company has supplied tickets. They are afraid to make noise, and are more into the business section of the Globe and Mail. Air Canada Centre is like a funeral home when the leafs play and rightfully so, the team has no spirit. If you were a player, can you get up for a crowd that basically dead! The fans at the ACC have no spirit. The fans that give a moral support can not afford or get tickets. Bring in the Raptors to the ACC the place erupts, ticket prices are as high but different clientele; younger and boisterous. Journey two hours south to Buffalo and again a spirited crowd, loud , into the game and brings out the emotion on the players.
Punch Imlach told Ballard when fired that the Sabres would win the Stanley cup before the leafs. It may be a long time for the leafs as the Sabres are again rebuilding.
I believe they should have a ground hog come out at the ACC and tell us how many more weeks of hockey.

Another point I wanted to make was leadership within the team. Your current captain I would argue is not someone who inspires his teammates. He isn't someone opposing teams fear unless you are Sean Avery and have just made an unflattering comment about Elisa Cuthbert.
Dyth, I don't think right now in today's leaf's line-up there is 1 player that puts fear into the other team when he is on the ice, they lack GRIT. As much as I dislike the Senators, Chris Neil comes to mind as that type of player, when he is on the ice guys are getting rid of the puck faster ( that is when you make mistakes )as they don't want to get hit by him, and he hits everyone and anyone he can and keeps the other team accountable for their actions on the ice, leafs are deeply lacking in that department, teams playing them right now know they only have to bump them off the puck and there is no fight back to get the puck. And think most people know in today's NHL rebuilds take 4-6 years at least. Then you have about a 5-6 year window and then you have to start trading parts away as they become to expensive. So hopefully sometime in the next 10 years we might , a BIG might, see the leafs win a playoff round. but don't get your hopes up.
Correction Big Mac... Chris Neil USED TO hit everyone.
The last few years, he misses (by inches!) so many checks against opponents on the boards that i seriously think he's gone blind in one eye and his depth perception is off!
Big Mac,
I am not going to argue with you because you are right; however, in this era of the league, grit is only going to get you so far. Perhaps I will clear up my statement a little bit. IF (capitalized letters aren't a mistake) Phaneuf was an effective captain and leader on the Leafs team and IF he was a player the opposition feared, he could certainly take players to task within the dressing room for not doing their jobs out on the ice (think Kessel's lackluster backchecking) or coming into the season not looking like you walked out of the beer league (again Phil Kessel). But Phaneuf isn't a good captain. Good captains lead great teams. Great captains inspire their teammates to sacrifice themselves for their team.
As for getting my hopes up, it won't happen because I am not a Leaf supporter and I don't watch much hockey anymore since the NHL decided they didn't want to play ball with Balsillie and move the Coyotes to Hamilton (I am not blaming the NHL entirely for this one but you have a struggling team in a struggling market with ownership issues and along comes a man with more money than the Pope and you don't want to play ball with him? But Balsillie could have played better with Bettman though. I just shook my head at that entire series of events and how the NHL would rather run an unsuccessful team in the desert than give Canada another team).
Dyth
Today's kw record ( paper ) letter to the editor. The leafs should change their name to the Toronto possums " They play dead at home and get killed on the road "
LMAO Exo ,, I am gonna use that.
Bulletin
Toronto Hydro is warning customers of the rotating winter power blackouts that are expected to occur on:
Saturday, Jan 31, 2015
Saturday, Feb 7, 2015
Monday, Feb 10, 2015
Monday, Feb 17, 2015
Saturday, Feb 14, 2015
Saturday, Feb 21, 2015
This is a province wide alert. The lack of power seems to consistently occur just after 7 pm on Saturday or 7:30 pm weekdays and is attributed to the excessive power required to run the goal light behind the Leafs' net.
Sincerely Yours,
Toronto Hydro
Dyth, hopefully both will be shipped out of town this coming Summer, Kessel stating he only skated a couple times in the offseason is a joke in this day and age and the fact not one thing is done about getting him in shape now......like you say , it's like beer league hockey, he can't back check because he is out of shape.............
At least the Leafs are doing 'bad' in an exceptional way. Winless in 11, a new club record.
If they lose to the Oilers tomorrow evening......
I try not to comment on Leaf threads as I've bled blue for37 yrs. it's like having a little brother 135lb and mouthy as shyte. Ya don't wanna back him, but you have to. Had a few pops the other night and heard the new leaf parody (YouTube it), SOB, it hit home....

lemme now if it works....

Late night smile ....
It's pretty sad, but the Leafs are actually making Tim Hudak's win/loss record look good. :D
So the Leafs unloaded Clarkson to Columbus for Horton (who many never play another NHL game because of his back injury) It's amazing when you have so much money you can easily just write off over $5 million a year for the next 5 years! Oh well, it gives them SOME cap room they desperately needed.
The Leafs are doing all these guys that are being traded a huge favor sending them to teams that actually have a shot at The Stanley Cup. I hope they send Nonis a Thank You card.
