When we are living in Res trailers working to pay this off
I truly have a problem with all of this. It wouldn't bother me as much if they were contributing to the economy , working, paying taxes, etc. But just sitting back and waiting for the rest of society to foot the bill is what I find hard to swallow... At one time there was pride within the FN, where is it now....
All the effort and cost to Canadians under the guise of "reconciliation" for so many years just went out the window. This will set back the relationship with the FN for the average Canadian for many years going forward.
Glad our taxes are hard at work.
Making a difference.
I'm going to keep my mouth closed on this one lol.

They always want more compensation, indicates how unwilling they are to work for themselves. Outright lazy, not all but the vast majority.
I guess their distaste for 'colonialism' is all a shame....it's obviously all about money if it buys their forgiveness...what good little capitalists.
Not gonna comment on the amount but will provide something for context. After WW2 in 1945 Germany was required to make reparations in the amount of $23 Billion USD. Adjusting for inflation and USD that would be roughly $450 Billion Cdn today. Many millions of deaths and wide scale destruction in WW2 - Draw your own conclusions.
What will it take as a society to end this insanity of keeping people segregated in perpetual subservience by paying people to do nothing? It amazes me FN would still put up with that crap among their own people. Sooner or later,FN leadership who are by far not stupid people will need to step up,pull their people up by their boot straps and end the loonacy. It's frickin' obscene and a national embarrassment.
Well there are 80,000 survivors of residential schools and I believe up tp 6,000 perished in those schools either from disease or in many cases unlawful death.
If civil law suits from all the survivors were launched and unlawful death suits launched against those involved, Federal Government, Churches and so forth this figure might end up being a bargain. If the Churches could avoid the hammer, then the Federal Government that granted them the authority would be on the hook.
There are 359 aboriginal lawyers in Canada.

Careful fellas, some of these comments are not meeting the benchmarks for INCLUSIVITY
I went to a protestant primary school and lost count of the times i was paddled on the rear end in front of the class, had numerous yard sticks broken on my head, punched by one male hot head teacher in the face on more than one instance, tied to a chair multiple times and when all else failed was sent to the principles office for the dreaded leather strap treatment. Not that i was an angel or anything but that was the standard operating procedure in that place. Never even crossed my mind until now that i should get compensation LOL. Really the only line i remember was when they actually drew blood they would stop.
Inch square yard stick and the strap. Didn’t kill us made us stronger
My mom said she used to get wacked on the knuckles if she wrote with her left hand.
Dad said he thought it was just for writing so he didn't use either hand...but guess that's why he had to do grade 1 twice.

55000 children impacted and to be paid.
40000 $ each.
If i am not mistaken-that is 2.2 Billion dollars.
Does anyone knows where the rest of the money goes?
38 billion....???
That's alot of coin
From what I read the other day it's for foster homes victims from 2006 and up.
The findings of the unmarked graves is just part of the reasons on the settlement. If I'm not mistaken.

Unless there is some proof in the sealed Church records that are about to be released....there is no proof that kids were 'killed' ..plenty of deaths due to turburculoses and malnutrition (inflicted before they were taken there ), etc.
Some more on the story it's not for the the unmarked graves at the schools. It's a more recent issue.

Flash forward to 2020...things haven't changed and the Governments are still 'rescuing' children from unfit living conditions...
In Canada, 52.2% of children in foster care are Indigenous, but account for only 7.7% of the child population according to Census 2016. This means 14,970 out of 28,665 foster children in private homes under the age of 15 are Indigenous.
That costs the Canadain taxpayers a lot of money, now we're going to have to give them more to say we're sorry for giving their children a chance.
Maybe it’s time for a Full Integration Policy.
Or a full separation policy...remove the FN from every benefit they get from the "Colonialist' they so hate.....no more health care, no more welfare, no more education, no hospitals etc etc. You want to live with just your 'culture and language..see how long you live in the 21st century.
Most will crack in a week without the government-supplied internet/cell services. :)
That was basically the intent behind the early residential school policy. It was an attempt to isolate native child from there cultural background so they could be assimilated into the colonial mine set. The government of those days found it impossible to assimilate or as you say integrate the adult population into the colonial mine set because they were content with their own traditional mind set which focus on having the necessities of life food, clothing, and shelter which they could draw on from the natural world, rather than working their backsides off to a form settlements and exploited the natural world to amass wealth. Meanwhile they began to see how good were at what we did, that they just wanted their rightful share for extinguishing their rights to the land on which their traditions and cultural relied on for their survival. Where does it all end? I recall a cause in the treaty making that allow for their compensation to go forward as long as the sun rises and set. So why on earth would they want to be integrated and possibly loss access to the money tree? Would you?

I think it would be naïve to hope there were not a number of murders considering the abuse many of those children endured. Perpetrators of sexual assault would have motive to kill in order to hide their crimes. There is plenty of evidence children simply vanished others found floating in rivers after their siblings were warned they would meet the same fate. The government is fully aware of these incidents and hence the compensation package announced.
That is one aspect, the separation and suffering from families being separated forcibly is another aspect.
So this has nothing to do with character assignation from any quarter and nothing to do with division, the division was for us to have done this in the past, where we divided their families and divided them from their culture and language.
Knowing you history you will be aware that our aboriginal BROTHERS IN ARMS saved this country from American invasion so even in that aspect I consider their descendants should have the same benefits as war veterans.
Wheres the evidence to support such claims. Many died from sickness as did many people across the country during those times.. If this was happening right up into the 1990's how many adults were charged and convicted of sexual crimes and murder?
I won't disagree yes they were taken from their homes and sent to schools. Obviously our government did it for reason considering the conditions many were living in on reserves, showed little hope in a prosperous future for the youth.
Handing them billions has solved nothing as poor living conditions and hopelessness for children continues to this day. Not hard to figure out why child suicide rate is so high in FN's reserves, and it's certainly not created by white folk.
As were the results of the "Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women" inquiry. The results of which pointed the finger directly back into their own communities. The vast majority of crimes against the indigenous are still perpetrated by their own....and why we don't hear about it anymore.
Our government stole kids from their families because of the living conditions, you are so out of touch what happened to them, you shouldn't even try contributing to this conversation, all the whining going on here, I could only imagine how much you aboriginal haters would be whining if it happened to your family members
Where is you evidence it did not happen. Why did these children die of sickness while in the custody of the state? Nobody cared so why would charges have been laid. Did taking them from their homes ensure a prosperous future for the youth?
Poor living conditions and haplessness apply to many white children who were not subjected to the residential system.
If the FN reserves were created by white folk, why did they not contribute to the present day problems of suicide and hopelessness.
Fortunately brighter mind's than yours have figured this all out and hence the justly deserved compensation.
If this is actually what you believe, then I think you may have dropped something...Attachment 42904
FN's have created their own failures and continue to today despite the billions in handouts that clearly they cannot manage.
Whites are not to blame for FN's poor living conditions, this problem they created all on their own. Apparently 10 billion hasn't fixed their drinking water problems as they care more about monetary handouts than taking care of they're own.
Obviously the living conditions today speak for themselves with the amount of youth suicide on reserves. The only ones out of touch are those who choose to ignore the problems within FN's and their own leaders refusal to address.

There isn't a shred of evidence as to that. Serial killers weren't indicated anywhere in the investigation and neither were Police shootings that weren't justified by armed subjects. The long and the short of it is as MikePal has previously stated. The investigation showed the exact opposite of the Liberal/feminist/media dichotomy. Once the bottom fell out of the proscribed BS story, the politicians banging the drum had their stupid mouths slammed shut in a hell of a hurry because their credibility disappearted like a puff of smoke. That also goes for the ridiculous "genocide" spin they tried to put on the gravesites which were no secret whatsoever. The only issue with them was the failure to be properly maintained which people justifiably found very disturbing.
Some old adages come to mind like ; "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions" or "must we suffer the sins of our fathers" and of course "absolute power corrupts absolutely". Forty billion dollars may buy a lot of Band-Aids but once they're gone the festering wounds will still remain.
Did not even take twenty seconds on a search to prove your wrong. There is ample evidence and numerous sources you should read.

Serial killers, when trolling for prostitutes along a red-light strip, can bereasonably assured that because of their typically transient lifestyle, thedisappearance of his victim will not be immediately deemed foul play(Sears, 1991:153).Moreover, as Sears and others note, society devalues women who sell their bodies, especially those who are poor, and in B.C. and other Canadian provinces, commonly alsoof Aboriginal background. The capture of the killer, therefore, often takes low priority, and the killer knows it. Hence, the serial killer can hunt the prostitute with relativeimpunity. F ar too often, the murders go unsolved, even unacknowledged.

If you spent more than 20 sec researching your facts Gilly...you might learn something one day;
note: 'Stranger' does not mean non-indigenous
Quote:
NWAC has found that clearance rates range from a low of 42% in Alberta to a high of 93% in Nunavut. Higher clearance rates in the North may
reflect the proportion of family violence cases in this region, and the fact that it is generally easier to lay charges when the offender is someone close to the woman (such as a partner or family member) than when the offender is an acquaintance or stranger.
Quote:
Of the murder cases in NWAC’s database where someone has been charged,
16.5% of offenders are strangers with no prior connection to the woman or girl
17% of offenders are acquaintances of the woman or girl (a friend, neighbour or someone else
known to her); and
23% are a current or former partner of the woman or girl.
NWAC’s research confirms that Aboriginal women experience violence by both Aboriginal and
non-Aboriginal offenders, and the vast majority are men.
Where this information is known, more than half (59%) of women and girls died in a residential dwelling.
AND from your own link:
The RCMP have said 70 per cent of the indigenous women slain in Canada meet their fate at the hands of an indigenous person.
"NWAC’s research confirms that Aboriginal women experience violence by both Aboriginal and
non-Aboriginal offenders, and the vast majority are men."

Lots of stuff out there to educate you.

They choose to live on reserves, just like many choose to leave the reserves and live elsewhere. They are not forced on reserves as you say...lol.
Again blaming whites for a problem that doesn't exist..
Attachment 42909
Op-ED pieces are far from evidence that FN women are being targeted by serial killers. Show us the cases where serial killers have been arrested and charged. There simply aren't any. The report on missing and murdered indigenous women states the exact opposite. No Canadian government has ever forced FN to live on reserves. That was an entity claimed by FN under treaty law.
Somehow all this reminds me of the OIC to restrict guns.
Truth does not matter. Political goals do, regardless of the fact, that the least involved pay the price.
Last time-great majority of law abiding LICENCED gun owners.
This time -all of us. Or at least -the ones who pay taxes.
Sunny days my friends.
Time to sing Kumbaya.
Well brother that's the whole problem a National Police Force the RCMP which was basically founded to oppress the First Nations being expected to protect them. They can't even protect female members who have won a multi million dollars settlement for guess what, sexual harassments and sexual assaults. They are basically hopeless as a Police Service that is why you have no serial killers charged or arrested.
These folks can hardly tie their own shoe laces.
Political goals were what kept Harper in power playing the pro gun crowd. Why would it be any different for the opposition parties to take a opposite view? How much tax would you pay living isolated up north, with no proper drinking water and very few services. Not much I guess.
That is a hypothetical question and gets a hypothetical answer. Do I receive compensation for all the taxes I have paid to support my Township and its citizens. Do I get compensation for legally buying the land. Do I get compensation for improvement on the land, like buildings and structures.
In these crazy times when people can self identify as a carrot I am sure someone can self identify as an indigenous person and get away with it.
another statistic that counters the 'poor little me' image the Indigenous try to portray. Even with many being sent to healing lodges instead of prison, those are full too.

Indigenous women make up almost half the female prison population, ombudsman says
Indigenous women now account for almost half of the female inmate population in federally run prisons, says a new report from Canada's correctional investigator.
Indigenous people make up about 32 per cent of the federal prison population, despite accounting for less than five per cent of the total population. Indigenous women, meanwhile, account for 48 per cent of the population in women's prisons.
Federal corrections investigator Ivan Zinger called the situation "appalling and shameful."
"It's just trending always, year after year, in the wrong direction. And this is irregardless of what various governments have done," he said.
The Indigenous inmate population has increased roughly 18 per cent over the past decade, while the number of non-Indigenous inmates has dropped by 28 per cent in the same period, says Zinger's report.
I believe the whole Indian mission approach was done with good intentions but somewhat misguided - there were people who truly wanted to help the Indian children - we had the same thing happen here in my country - and as far as physical punishment goes in those days it was accepted and was consider normal - when I was in grade school it was not uncommon for a teacher or the principal in a school to use physical punishment - even as late as 1951 in the public school I went to the gym teacher would wack guys for misbehaving - I think it is somewhat unfair to apply present day standards to things that happened years ago - we need to be careful that we don't over react and blow something way out of proportion to actually what happened -
Hopefully as time goes on we learn and not repeat the same mistakes that were made in the past -
There is a lot of background to what happened that is never told....this article from True North confirms what you have said.. it was done with the best of intentions and with the help of the indigenous communities who wanted to see a better life for their children.
Good read :
more see: https://tnc.news/2021/12/19/the-misl...ntial-schools/Quote:
If “forced to attend school” simply means compulsory school attendance that applies to all children, then the claim is misleading. School attendance, or its equivalent in homeschooling, is required of all Canadian children, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, as it is of children in all modern societies.
Indeed, school attendance was not even required of Indian children until 1920, when an amendment to the Indian Act made them subject to the same compulsory attendance as all others had been. However, prior to 1920 Catholic and Protestant residential schools had operated in one form or another for more than half a century. Indigenous children attended those schools because their parents wanted them to attend. Education was seen as a benefit.
Even after 1920, enforcement of attendance for Indian children was weak. As late as 1944, records show that upwards of 40% of Indian children went to no school at all.
Throwing billions of dollars at the FN issue has been an unmitigated failure only succeeding in making things worse. Government policy is condescending and racist bordering on insanity. First Nations want to be autonomous. They need to be allowed to do so completely. It's long past the time to pull the plug on the entire thing.
