Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,
I do not envy your job and the diverse and often competing priorities you must face on a daily basis. But as the Canada-wide shutdown of rail services drags on, it is time for you to step up and get serious about your domestic responsibilities.
No one is asking you to intervene in police operational matters. For you to publicly imply so is a cop-out and an abdication of your leadership role. No one is asking you to deny anyone’s right to protest. But when such protests endanger public safety and our national economy, action is required to ensure that the rule of law is maintained for all Canadians.
Mr. Trudeau, the current situation is one of your own making. Years of eloquently spoken but ultimately empty moral platitudes have done nothing but raise unrealistic expectations in your efforts to please everyone. You now find yourself in a perfect storm where everyone (First Nations, environmentalists, industry and regular working Canadians) are simultaneously demanding that you follow through on your promises to them. However, you are currently abroad attending lavish functions and rubbing elbows with dictators in pursuit of an expensive shiny prize that no one outside of the political chattering classes cares about.
Mr. Trudeau, it is time to get up from the edge of your luxury hotel-suite bed, get your head out of your hands and get back to Canada to do your job.
Sincerely,
