QEWII (WMU 56) Hunting

Odd scenario. Got a camping trip scheduled for Sept 8th,9th,10th and i was thinking about doing some very light hunting (provided it's legal).


The reg's document seems to bounce around a lot for info on provincial parks and before actually taking a firearm in there I intend to call the MNR office in Minden.


But as best as i can tell. Rabbit/Squirrel is not open, Grouse not open, Morning Dove is (Migratory regs), Fox is, but it says to review provincial park rules and it says it's generally not allowed in provincial parks. But QEWII is one of the allowed parks as per page 28 of the regulations.


Basically i want to bring my Henry AR7 .22 into the park and am willing to hunt anything that is legal. (Taking rookies out). It is highly unlikely we will actually fire that gun, but in case i come across a warden.


I essentially want to teach some new folks the basics of hunting all while keeping it all legal. I'll have a gun sock for it although it will mostly be packed up in the stock the entire trip.


Any help clarifying the rules would be greatly helpful.

Although dove is open can't use a 22 on them. Shotgun only and nontoxic also.

Correct. Thank you for pointing that out. This is really more of an educational 'hunt' and i would only bring in 2 clips of ammo (16 rounds). Weight on an camping trip is a concern. As best as I can find my options are limited to Red Fox and Skunk. This is more of a firearms safety and nature watching 'hunt'....but I want to make sure everything is legal.

My pack weighs 57 lbs and there's no way in hell im adding 5 lbs to it for 16 shots and the whole 30 seconds it would take to shoot them into a target. I also have land that I shoot in every other week or so (not mine so no the newbies can't come with as I don't make the rules).


16 is a convenient number if you're familiar with that rifle.


Don't think for a second I wouldn't take a fox hide. Skunk not so much...

Here is the link for general provisions for provinicial parks (https://www.ontario.ca/laws/regulation/070347#BK38), Section 35 reads:
35. No person shall use or display a firearm in a provincial park other than,

(a) a peace officer in the lawful execution of his or her duties;
(b) an employee in the Ministry or an agent of the Ministry for the purpose of wildlife management and control;
(c) a person lawfully hunting under the authority of subsection 9 (3) of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997;
(d) a person authorized by the superintendent to use or display a firearm in a provincial park. O. Reg. 347/07, s. 35.

So you can't use or display a firearm in a PP unless it is for the purposes of hunting within the FWCA. You can bring it to a PP but it has to stay out of sight unless you are hunting.

Save yourself the weight in your pack, and leave the rifle at home. Or re-schedule your trip for a couple of weeks when you can actually use it for hunting.

Trust me the ministry doesn't like to be jerked around and it won't make for a good introduction for your newbies. Be upfront and honest about your intentions will go a long way to making your time outdoors more enjoyable.

There's a comprehensive list in the schedule that specifies which PP's permit hunting under various open seasons. I'm pretty sure that QEII PP isn't on the list.

Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands is on the list of PP which allow hunting. Page 28 of the hunting regulations.

I can't believe I actually have to explain this in a manner where it makes sense to finsfurfeathers:

Imagine you have a couple of buddies who have never really fished before, but they watch lots of fishing shows and they have general knowledge of the sport but would love to try it out. You tell them, hey we're going to go out on a canoe trip and go fishing. but you can't take any fishing gear. I'll paddle you around the lake, show you were fish may be, talk about why they would be there, but you're not actually going out to catch fish or cast a line in the water. How interested do you think those newbies would be in doing it? And what kind of impression would the sport of fishing leave on them? Probably not a great one and they would never try it again. However if you did take them out, bring the gear, have them hold the rod in the water, tell them how to make the lure dance and they don't catch fish or even see a fish they're still likely to continue fishing or take it up more seriously.

This is no different. If i say, HEY we're going to go rabbit hunting but since rabbits are out of season i'm not bringing a firearm. We're going to get up super early though, and look for rabbit signs and so on.

Or i could say, Hey we're going fox hunting, we'll be using this sweet henry AR 22, we're going to get up super early, go for a nice hike deep into the woods from our campsite. Set up shop where we think we might see some foxes and we'll be super quiet, we'll get to hear the forest 'breath' around us while we wait for our shot. Knowing full well the likelihood of seeing a fox, and having a clean shot to take is less than 1%...At least i can sell it to them in a way they'll want to continue learning to hunt and maybe take the sport up fully at some point.

I travel a ton to the US for work, i would not jeopardise getting any kind of a firearm charge and losing my job over shooting off a couple rounds in the woods when I can already do that on land i have access to. Thank you for your toll though finsfurfeathers, please take that attitude to Reddit where it's more welcome.

Once you call the MNR office in Minden I am sure they will be able to explain all the rules to you and even make some suggestions, then you will be good to go.

As a general comment when you are on a forum and ask a question you will get answers you might not like. With your contribution of 25 posts on here I would not personally call a long standing member a troll.

I think the consensus on here is that bringing a gun into a Provincial Park at that time of year is "not a good idea" .

Correct. There are more polite ways to answer questions though. And he didn't really answer my question, just accused me of being a lawbreaker...classy. As a member with only 25 posts I would have have thought most folks would be polite and helpful to newbies.

OK.

1. You compare fishing to hunting, wrong. Just plain wrong. Open seasons for fishing, and the ability to participate is a matter of stopping in a corner store to make sure you're good and legal.

2. You have a couple of "buddies" who you want to go camping with, and "introduce them to hunting". Yeah, ok. The only thing open is fox, and skunk, you already said you don't want to hunt the latter, so you're going to go out expressly for fox, are you? Yeah.....ok. You want to introduce someone to hunting, do it when something is open that you actually can have a bit of a time shooting at. Like grouse, or waterfowl.....both open a week after your trip. The premise that you are going into QE II PP, with the express intent of hunting fox doesn't pass the smell test. Are you doing any scouting? Have you been there to find small game which might keep the fox around? No.....what you're going to do is swat a ton of mosquitoes, and sit around, until boredom sets in, and that will be that.

You come on an open forum, asking experienced members to validate what you want to do, and then get your nose bent out of joint because you don't receive the answer you want, the way you want it.

Go camping in QE2 PP, no problem. Wanna go camping with a gun, and they don't allow it, unless you're hunting. There's tons of crown elsewhere, where you can do just that.

Not being a troll just advising to set a proper example.
In this sport we all face rules and regulations that may limit or curtail our activities. Most are left to be followed on our own conscience as the MNR can't be every where. So either you follow them or try some legalise to circumvent them. No sportsman here will support an obvious way to try and get around the regulations no matter how angelic one tries to make it. If you are going to be a mentor the first lesson to teach them that this sport has clear rules the governs every aspect and they can't pick and choose which ones to follow depending if its convenient or not.
There is no room for creative interpretation to achieve your own selfish outcomes
In your example about fishing you didn't mention if they purchased a license or if the season is opened. If they had not purchased a license or if the seasons are closed than no they can't even dangle a line.
I started "hunting" with dad when I was 10. Carried a stick for 4 years and made believe till I was 15 which at that time I could legally carry a gun . Did it diminish my experience because I didn't carry a gun NO!

I'm sorry in my example i didn't explain every facet, i think it was implied they would be properly licensed and fishing for something in season. Hence why in the real life example we're talking about fox/skunk.

Yes...it's high because FFF and myself participate in open discussions about various hunting and fishing activities. We've also been on the forums for a number of years. ( we've likely also been licensed hunters for longer than you've been alive)....

Than why bring the gun? If they are grown men as you say than you need not baby them. Tell them as it is seasons are closed can't bring the gun.
You admit the is no real expectation less than 1% of seeing a fox so you are not fox hunting.
In all your descriptions there is no real intention to hunt fox. bringing 2 clips of ammo for an animal you state as having less than 1% chance of seeing further contradicts your intention.
MNR will have nothing of it if you give them the answer your trying to push here.

My post and that post are not alike. The person above broke the law, accidentally or not on purpose or not, he was not allowed to cross that property line without permission. I'm also not 'creatively' interpreting the laws. I'm actually doing the opposite, I'm using the literal translation of the law to ensure I'm doing everything by the book.

The fact that you think that his post and my post are similar provides the necessary proof to withdraw from this intellectual discussion we're having. You unfortunately showed up unarmed.

I would also love an MNR officer to pay me a visit in the woods when I have all the proper gear, licenses, and proof of my actions. Happens all the time when I'm fishing and MNR officers are quite friendly when they realise you're the type of person that follows the rules.

I've never been woodcock hunting. I bet if i decided to go woodcock hunting i could easily have a less than 1% chance of seeing/shooting a woodcock. Does that mean i'm breaking the law and the MNR should assume my actions are malicious?

Thanks BBB for helping FFF out, he needed it. Also i didn't mean to get you all worked up, i wouldn't want you to fall off your chair and break a hip since you must be quite old if you've been licensed that long.

I would assume you and FFF are the type of folks that don't walk around accusing people in real life of malicious intent or that they're trying to break the law. Perhaps that's where your inquiry should have started, no? I work with various levels of LEO, including MNRF.....my "smell test" analogy is a good one.

You're going "fox hunting" in a Provincial Park. OK...what purpose? You're not going to eat it, no one is going to skin out a Summer coat fox, and you're in a PP, so you're not performing predator control.......

You're looking for a reason to take a gun while camping. There's lot of crown nearby where you can do that, with impunity.

I led with I'm going to check with the MNR in Minden. Most people who are intending to break the law don't check with the cops to see if it's ok.....

To put a cap on this thread and answer the op question, call the park office. Often you'll find they're the only ones that actually know the rules regarding their park. You'll likely have to speak with a supervisor. I hunt in at least two other PPs around here and when I called the MNRF I was directed to the parks for details. They hooked me up promptly.

In terms of your fox hunt I think honk it's probable that any hunt you're looking at in a PP is going to be highly specific and highly regulated. Darlington, Presquile and Mcraes come to mind in the south.

I guess there must be something wrong with you, YOU came on here asking advice from hunters who have collective experience of hundreds of years and when you are given the advice and get opinions you do not want you decide to insult the same hunters who have posted for years and are the salt of the earth.

If you care to troll through their previous posts you will see they always try to give good solid information. Hopefully its just your lack of maturity that we are reading and maybe you will re consider the name calling.Hopefully you issue an apology for your terrible posts.

Being sent to coventry is not very pleasant and that place is no where near QEW 11.

I just read through all 14 pages of the linked thread, and the link to Muskoka to-daily is no longer found. Anyone care to elaborate on the outcome of that particular instance? It feels like I just read a book with the last chapter ripped out.

QE2 Wildlands doesn't have a "park office" it's a designated wilderness area under the management of the MNRF.

Can't recall the details if memory serves me was $1500 fine. I'm sure there are others here more computer savy and can find the actual court case given time.
