Thanks guys and ladies. Farewell to all.

I have enjoyed my time here on the forum, and will at times miss many of you. But since I no longer find enjoyment pursuing hunting and fishing in Ontario, I find I have less and less interest in the topics of the forum.

To the few I have been lucky enough to hunt with, I have enjoyed and will remember our time in the field fondly.

The fact that I have found so few to hunt with and so few places to do it does play a small part, but the real problem is closer to home. By closer to home I mean my wife, that I have for the last ten years have encouraged and mentored in fishing and then hunting. After ten years I still have to prepare for each trip as if I was taking a small child with me. As the need to do more work to prepare for, and during the hunt increases she still does not seem to understand that she can not just sit and wait for me to load/unload, setup/take down and generally do it all. A simple walk on a trail for Grouse is do able because she can at least dress herself, and I only have to prepare shotguns, shells and a day pack. A waterfowl hunt is out of the question, with decoys, calls, blinds, shotguns, shells, boat( kayak ) and gear. Her idea of time does not help, arriving an hour and a half after the start of legal shooting and trying to put out a spread of decoys, blinds and everything by my self leaves little time to hunt when she only want to be away from the house for a "Couple" hours.

I would just leave her at home.

Part of being married for a long time involves having some time to do "your own stuff".

Snowwalker, her hunting trips with you are likely as enjoyable for her as accompanying her on trips to the mall are for you.

I to have been leaving my much better half at home for 30 years .works best for both of us .I get some alone time and she gets the vacuum our as soon as I leave ...lol Everyone needs some time to them self. Best of luck..Dutch

well said terrym! I personally would not give up something i'm passionate about because of my wife....I was a hunter/fisherman long before I met her and will continue to do so until I can no longer physically do it!

Good grief,Snowwalker,we'll really miss you. I don't want to pry,but,does she even like hunting with you? Are the trail walking grouse hunts fun for you both? This is just a suggestion. FWIW and if the answers to both questions is "yes",then,just stick with taking her on "light duty" daytime outings for Grouse and save the "heavy duty" stuff for you and the buds. I don't think it's good to throw the baby out with the bath water. Like someone else has already posted,everyone needs some "alone" time.:santa:

My wife fishes with me 6-10 times a year, lucky enough to fish off of a Pontoon boat so it's just walk on an away we go. she packs more stuff than I would need for a weeks vacation and there is usually huffing and puffing on my part as it takes her fair bit of time to get ready, for that matter it takes her a long time to get ready to go anywhere. but at the end of the day, we do enjoy our time on the water together. leaves me to fish about 100 times a year by myself. would never think of giving up something I have a Great deal of passion for......wife included in that. :) :) hopefully you'll hang around......

Part of life and hunting is is always struggling/finding balance! Do what makes you happy, Moderation in life is key! Good luck!

Yes my wife says its my time when go fishing. She will fish on the odd occasions, never on the ice. I try to convince her to come with me the odd time but no go. I try and ice fish 2 or 3 times a week.

As mentioned before its in our blood i was born to fish i love to fish I was raised to fish well before i met the better half.

Keep her at home get out and do the things you love to do. When she wants to go with you let her go .

The problem is that she wants to go hunting and fishing, but she never does any of the work. If it was just another guy that I hunted with, then I would stop hunting with them. It is also not just about doing all the work, she needs to almost have me pick her clothes out for her. She over dresses all the time, but the last we where out with Alex, she was so under dress that she was sick for weeks afterwards. We all knew that there was going to be heavy rain, Wind and cold temps and dressed for the wet weather. I didn't find out till later that she was only wearing waders with just pants under them, a green rain shell and shirt on top and NO insulation at all.
There was no reason for her to have been cold and gotten sick, except she did not dress properly for the weather. It is not like she has not got any idea how to use her gear. We have gone out in all kinds of weather to test stuff. Snow storms, rain storms, heat cold and hiking , kayaking and snow shoeing.

At this point if I go hunting she wants to go, but I just can't deal with baby sitting her. I am also worried that I am going to miss something one day and she will get hurt or worse.

Been building a lot of Electronic projects Like Bi-directional Pulse Width Modulated motor controls, Geiger counters( Birthday gift for her), researching more projects, and selling off gear to pay for it.

When I first got married my wife would come out with me...be it once in a blue moon (hunting=walk in the bush along a trail and some fishing=mostly reading while I cast/look for fish) but now after all these years of marriage, she lost the desire but I haven't so she doesn't come but I keep going....

Sounds like you need some me time.... take her along once in a while, but make sure you go out without her too, that way you both win.

This sounds like an excuse to me. First you got her into hunting and fishing and now you don't want to do it anymore because she's lazy. Stop babying her an enjoy the outdoors together or alone. Whats next on the list to quite if this is your attitude. Anyways hope everything is good in your future take care.

Sounds pretty sexy to me,only j/King.
Get rid of the cotton and use wool garments and dress in thin layers. Back packs are a good place to store the different layers. You wanted to mentor your wife,so use common sence and help her learn. Maybe set some ground rules.

Been doing that for ten years now, and she still forgets her mittens in a snowstorm. She has all the layers from moisture wicking base layers to outer layers for wet and\or very cold weather. The problem with trying to help her learn and showing her what to do and what not to do is that she does not think she is doing anything wrong when she forgets her mittens.

Try being away from the house for 16 days, getting home at 10 PM Friday and having to spend that next eight hours collecting gear, loading it, doing the driving, setting up, and all well she sleeps or stands around watching. She has been home every night, but has never taken the time to get her personal gear ready, she plans to do that Saturday morning ten minutes before we need to leave.

Sounds more like you aren't into hunting and are using your wife as an excuse. The conversation should be hey I'm going hunting tomorrow would you like to go if so have your gear ready if not see you when I get back, it's not hard.

I have not given up hunting, just not hunting in Ontario. Now she and I will be taking separate vacations, where I enjoying the peace of the north woods in Alberta, and BC.

I've never experienced the peace of the north woods in Alberta and BC. Must be way better than Ontario?

My man never had dogs in his childhood. I told him I was getting a dog when we got married. He said, " No way!". One weekend when
he was gone , I got a dog. Then 6 + more over the years. :) He got used to it and loves the dogs, although he wouldn't spend $5.00 on them. He often goes out with me with the dogs so he can take bird pics. It is up to him whether he goes or not.

Snow walker : Go by yourself in ON 8/10 times. Do all the work for 2/10 that wouldn't hurt.

Sorry that you are having such problems. My wife is ok with me hunting as it gives her time to pursue her own hobbies. As we recently discussed, if she had a big problem with me having guns and hunting , it would have been a deal breaker. We've been happily married for over 35 years, the last 3 being retired.

No Leaving Ontario to Hunt in the Athabasca or Peace River Basins. I will be taking my hunting trips by myself, and plan to hunt places I want to go.

As someone who has two ex wives I do get where your coming from. But if you get the itch to get out and have no one to get out with all though I don't know you your welcome to come fish with me down this way anytime.

There's a time and a place for every thing, take her on fair weather hunts for grouse and easy stuff .you can still work in some duck and deer hunts on your own.spring turkey season is another good time of year to get wife's and friends out.I am sure she could find some thing to do without you. ...I guess I just didn't get were you are coming from. I gladly do as much work as needed to get my girls on ducks deer and turkeys.I would give up the wife before giving up the outdoors.D

Snowwalker, thing you need to find a few guys around London who Hunt and mention to the wife your going with someone off the Forum. lost track of how many guys on this forum I've fished with and not once did the wife complain,,,,,have spent weeks away with groups from here.

I would hope your wife would understand the need to get out with some fellow forum hunters...and sure there must be lots around your area..........

She has had ample time to learn how to dress. If she dresses inappropriately and gets cold or wet then 3 things can happen.
1 - she will continue to get wet and cold. Not your problem.
2 - she will learn how to dress.
2 - she will stop coming.

I would not have your patience - unless she is smokin hot and then I would put up with it.

I have a very serious question or two for you ,.
When you get home , how much time do you actually devote to her after being gone for a couple of weeks ? maybe she is trying to tell you something ?
It seems that when you get home , it is all about you , you want to go hunting or fishing and your wife goes with you just to be near you and does not have that much interest in your hunting and fishing , but just to appease you goes along.

Maybe it is time to do some very serious thinking . ???????

Seems to me like this has nothing to do with a loss of interest for hunting and fishing, but rather a loss of interest in babysitting. I'm no therapist, but maybe it's time to revisit your relationship. Does this woman make you happy? Do you make her happy? Does she have any interests? What does she do with her time? Does she have a job?

Ok a quick reply to cover the bases.
Yes very tired of baby sitting, but worried sick she'll get sick, hurt, or worse if I don't and let the chips fall where they may. Then I would not have the woman I love deeply to go to dinners, movies, events with, work around the yard/house with, listen to her little purr of a snore when she tries to sleep with her chin on her chest. If she was not around who would I go to home Depot with to buy stuff for the house with, or go grocery shopping with, or make tea for, get a beer for, buy flowers for, build things for, fix things for.
Hot?? Well she keeps this old bull in the rut..��
Oh ya all most forgot.. Yes she works full time as an X-ray tech at the Hospital, has her ham radio license, face books with her/my family and our friends, works on her garden, has dinner with her friends from work or the ladies in the ham club, takes good care of the house, the dogs, the cats, and me.

When we marry we take vows before God to "babysit" one another in one way or another.

"Problem ownership" would indicate that you own the problem(it affect/bothers you) and therefore it is up to you to fix or accept the "problem."

Sounds like a great wife and a weary husband. That will soon switch and she will have your back. Marriage works that way, so that one is always strong supporting the one that's temporarily lax , sick, etc.

The yoke will even up shortly and then she will be pulling you along life's path, complaining about you soon. It's called life. Do what it takes to make marriage work.

All the best to you two, sounds like a good family and God knows we need more good families in Canada.

Yes she is and yes I am..

As for me having to fix the problem.....started on that already. I returned her Chistmas gift I had bought her and am looking for something else.
She noticed she was not getting her Beretta over and under to go with the upland vest she got last year. She freaked out got very upset, but now we are having long phone chats and lots of email.
I have to thinks she's something special, I don't even have an O/U let alone a Beretta..

Still does not change my NOT HUNTING in Ontario. She has suggusted a couple weeks roaming around the top end of Quebec in the Nanunvic region.

The main reason for not hunting in Ontario is to get out with people I know and use to hunt with in places where there is real wilderness. Where some guide can not buy up the hunting rights to half the farm land in the county, or I don't have to drive 8 to 10 hours to find a real trail to walk for grouse.

Well let me just say this - some suggested you get professional advice - I agree and I'm going to give it to you for nothing - when you get down to it - from the beginning it was meant that women were not to do certain things - women aren't built to go hunting plain and simple - if they were they would have been made so that they have an easier way to take a leak in the bush -

A waterfowl hunt is out of the question, with decoys, calls, blinds, shotguns, shells, boat( kayak ) and gear. Her idea of time does not help, arriving an hour and a half after the start of legal shooting and trying to put out a spread of decoys, blinds and everything by my self leaves little time to hunt when she only want to be away from the house for a "Couple" hours.

Between our current political situ , metrosexuality and all the other I've heard as of late that tops it. I wish I had that problem. I'm soon going to quit to, but for a real reason. Seeing threads like that is driving shares in wisers way up

Reminds me of a guy I hunted with who said that women were not welcome, I really enjoy hunting with my wife, I have to walk her through a lot of things still but then again I started shooting at 5 and was in the bush hunting with dad at 10, she started at 27.

Well men - goes to show you that I wasn't the only person realizing that the gals had a very big problem - TPM - thanks for the Cabela's item - now I know what to buy Sharon for Christmas -

My wife uses them and they work great, you'll just have to give her a lesson on wind direction first

Hey neat story time
When I was still on the floor working they had us Water/sand blasting these huge sectional water gates. Anyhoo, we're out in a yard where the sun gets in and the breeze don't, and You're double leathered head to toe. 30 pound air helmet on. I mean the amount of water you'd go through was just insane. So our compressor can not keep a fuse in one of the phases to save your soul. I being the lead on the job called the electrical manager to send someone to solve this issue. So in comes the truck. It's Mary. Mary would have been about my age (At that time 35ish) So gets looking at the compressor. The others from my crew went back to the plant to get some stuff. Just me and Mary. Mary worked and lived doing main/labour on a ship for 9 years. Mary's facial hair was superior to mine. Anyway I haven't sweat in like an hour so it's looking for somewhere to go. I go over to where we had these sectionals stacked with my back TO WHERE MARY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE!!!! and start relieving. As I'm finishing I look 8 feet over beside me and there it is with you know what spread with fingers and a fine stream. You might say Mary was ahead of her time. An innovator of sorts

I've just read the post for the first time. I have only 2 comments to make:

1) Can I suggest some marriage counseling?

2) I'm still trying to determine if this is a late April Fool's Day joke or not...

My wife and I get along great...well after 39 years u have too..She took an intrest in hunting and fishing with me since day 1..
She got her gun and hunting licence and shot a 10 point buck..the next year she didnt even want to put in for it..
She has never moose hnted..but has gone to the camp and just waited for the guys to come in at night..
Has gone duck hunting also..until she took a tumble in the marsh and came out smelling worse than a rose..
Fishing in the back yard is OK..but going out and trolling is boring for her..
I still bow hunt and fish..
She says the absent makes the heart fonder..lol
But she will go up north with me and ride the trails on a quad..while we grouse hunt..but she dosent carry a gun anymore..
She will point them out and go in the bush for them when the smoke clears..
But I guess after me working out of town for 8 months on end..with only a phone to keep in touch..
Has made her realize that the grass isnt greener on the other side..
All in all we have 2 great kids and grandchildren..
So if I was you I would keep going..after something you love to do..
I know ..easier said than done..
