Greyhound Canada permanently shutting down bus service

Planes and trains full of people but buses are a no go.

"The motor coach company says its remaining routes in Ontario and Quebec will cease permanently on Thursday."

"The decision comes a year after Greyhound Canada temporarily suspended service due to a sharp decline in passengers and mounting travel restrictions amid the first wave of COVID-19."

“This adds insult to injury to these workers and their families already impacted by the pandemic and the Trudeau government and the Progressive Conservative Party MPPs are to blame,” Costa said. “They not only failed to provide COVID-19 relief for this hard-hit industry but ignored calls for many years for critical federal funding of Greyhound Canada and the entire struggling intercity bus industry and to stop the ruinous deregulation of intercity bus lines.”

“This is devastating news for the thousands of Canadians, especially those from indigenous and First Nations communities, who have relied on Greyhound for transportation,” Costa added. “Seniors won’t be able to visit their families, students won’t be able to get to school, and many others will be left stranded.”

Bankroll the airlines at peril to public, allowing them the fly during a pandemic, but God forbid they help a struggling vital link for many communities.

The NEWS said Greyhound has been losing money in Canada since 2004 when they shut down operations in Western Canada. I wonder if another bus company filled their shoes out west.

Thanks....it makes sence that there must some kind of service as there still a market.

When my daughter was up in New Liskard she used to take the buss to Ottawa. She said lots of people on the bus were coming to the city for appointments with specialist at the Ottawa Hospital. I couldn't imagine paying $160, 8 hrs on bus (16hrs return) for a 15-30 minute appointment.

Crazy. I've taken the grey hound countless times. Always been a decent service.

I found it over priced.

I have always been an advocate of private business/industry standing on their own two feet, without government intervention. However, when looking at the sheer size of this country and most of that mass being sparsely populated as it is, I feel the feds should be playing a role in keeping a viable transportation network to serve the populace. My opinion is from looking out the window from Northern Ont., not the GTA and surrounding region.
Passenger rail service has all but disappeared and now bus service will be severely decapitated. That leaves only auto or air as an alternative? Not everyone has a vehicle and not every town/village is serviced with the air option.
The various gov'ts within this country have shut down many local healthcare facilities in the small towns and centralized them to the bigger centers. Many gov't services themselves have closed shop in the smaller towns and moved to the big city's. So what is a person supposed to do now that their last and only travel option to access these cities has shut down?
The lack of public transportation within this country needs to be addressed by all gov'ts! It is the gov'ts job to provide/assist the infrastructure that serves the citizens.

Always lots of $$ for Air Canada, BBD, Go, TTC, 400 to 499, toy cars (EVs) etc etc. Which is “fine”.
But what about everyone else...

I'm guessing if there is demand for it, another service will take its place after covid is over.
If you would run electric buses instead of diesel, you could probably get a ton of cash from JT to get it up and running.
However, when you're already on a long bus ride, do you really want to put in additional stops to charge the battery?

Oh I'm sure there will be a demand, but will it be profitable enough for anyone wanting to invest into it?

I'm not to sure an electric bus would do too well stuck in a snow storm north of the Soo with passengers wanting heat, after the batteries die.

Just need to pull a trailered 6kw diesel generator with an extension cord running into the bus. ;)

Outside of Northern areas, How much demand for the CBC. Not a chance they could survive without govt support.

I’m not a fan of corporate welfare. Not because it doesn’t work, or depending on devil details a need. But because the government picks winners. Usually based where they will get, or keep votes. Every one else, too bad, so sad.

I don’t recall exactly when Northern rail got shelved. Not all that long ago I think.
The demand may not be there, the need is.
