In the past is was the churches and local communities that helped the less fortunate, there were faces and people associated with the help and for most people receiving the help this led to some accountability. When it is the faceless state giving the hand outs it is much easier to take without giving back or feeling a need to change.

Aside from refugee status, immigration in this country basis itself around employable skills, without skills it is really hard to get in.

I actually find it really hard when I work with someone and find out that they were an Engineer back home but here nothing is recognized and costs too much to be recognized so here they have to sweep the floors to get any money.

We have free loaders in every society, those who use the system will continue to use the system no matter where they end up, I still think that this is the minority in all situations, generally people feel bad being a burden on society.

When my dad immigrated in the 1950's his brother was a tool and die maker at age 16. His certification wasn't recognized in Canada and was told to go back to school. He went back to school and ended up knowing more than the teacher and also taught part of the course. When you immigrate to this country or other countries you have to jump through the necessary hoops in order for your skill or trade to be recognized or accepted. We have standards that have to be met. I don't feel sorry for anyone that comes to this country that ends up pushing a broom and getting paid. Life is what you make of it because the opportunities are endless.

I understand 100% but it really sucks when you put in all the time and get all the experience and they have to do it all over again. I think this is why all the 1st generation immigrant friends that I have are pushed so hard in school, their parents had to start over and for them to just blow off their opportunities would be out of the question.

People I think often miss the point of immigration. We need it. We are an aging population and birthrates are trending down.
Then to, theres this thing called big nanny, social services and pryamid schemes.

If your "against" immigration for immigrations sake, just shooting yourself in the foot.

What really still makes me nuts is people coming from other countries who were professionals in their field,but,can't afford to or can't find the time to go back to university to re-qualify for Canadian admission to their profession because they needed to find a job in a hurry. I once worked with a Policeman who came from Venezuela qualified as a civil engineer,but,when he got here,two months later his job offer disappeared when the company closed. He applied as a Police officer and was accepted by the OPP almost immediately because of his university degrees. Now,figure that one out.
