The large statues in parks and public squares across Canada venerate public figures whose conduct is being re-examined in the context of changing societal attitudes toward treatment of First Nations. Removing the statues is an acknowledgement that what was done by them in that era is not compatible with today's society. Removing statues of past leaders for various sins isn't a new phenomenon and explains why many public statues of Lenin, Hitler, Hussein, Botha, Amin, etc. were taken down in their countries.
