The writing has been on the wall for years. Both the problems, the corruption, and the scope/magnitude. Some used to say here (Trimmer being one)….If you thought Mike Harris was bad, just wait, it’s only going to get worse.

Nope people listened to the smoke blowers, refused to listen or simply look, listened to the puppet masters, campaigned for them.

It is getting worse... 5 weeks off schools for the 1 board, 3 for my son's board, seemingly no negotiations... atleast not sincere ones... now a legal debate on if the strikes are even legal since it is provincial level issue not local issue (Filed over a week ago and no decision yet....) if Peel etc are forced back does the whole province go on strike the following week.

Universities have already said they would take mid-term marks... but what about the material to be covered... (puts 1st yea University students at a real disadvantage)....


Of course once again IF the union truly is working for the province for the teachers, the 3 boards will be sent back... 2 weeks later the whole province goes on strike... June/July/ August and maybe part of Sept. (like the BC strike)... saving Ontario hundreds of millions....

Unacceptable. Bring in an arbitrator and force negotiation / compromise.

Update on Ont​ario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) ruling
The Ontario Labour Relations Board's (OLRB) Chair Bernard Fishbein stated that a ruling will not come until the "middle of next week". As such, secondary schools remain closed to students. ​


2 weeks to make a decision.... are they waiting to see who offers them the biggest bribe?

Arbitrators have not been kind to the taxpayers - be it teachers, police, firemen....

What we need is a few arbitrator settlements where the union loses - so there is some risk involved from the union side from going to arbitration.

When you take blood money at some point the Sharks want payment. Wynne owes the teachers her job, her entire career actually. I'm thinking they aren't going to back down. Expect her to pay up even if she tries to hide it.

If this was private vs public sector, we would be switching to long distance education via Mexico to get our children educated. And don’t think that won’t happen.Unions are going to eat their own, at a faster rate than big business.

This is clearly not a sustainable model. Public Sector cannot sustain itself with the current salaries and pensions, especially when everyone else is making less money and pensions are a thing of the past. Fair? No. Fair that classrooms are too big? No. Fair that everyone in the business sector is doing 5x what they did 10 years ago? No. Fair that jobs have gone to countries who pay less? Not for us. But the economy is a living beast, and is equalizing globally. Our standard of living is going down, not up. Having a job is not a right. It's a privilege. To be sure, unions have raised the standard for their members, but some of the rules they’ve enforced through bargaining have made them (companies and unions) less adaptive to change and completely uncompetitive.Unions are not interested in efficiency. If they are truly concerned about class size and special education then it has been well documented that amalgamating the Catholic and Public board into one board would save $1.2 - $1.6B annually. Further savings would be realized by doing the same with the two French boards. It is all about economies of scale. Those annual savings would certainly go a long way towards funding programs for special needs children, funding smaller class sizes and provide new learning materials. After all it is about what is best for the kids, right?

Yes, I'd love smaller class sizes. But that doesn't really mean much with my son missing two months of school and messing up his path to University. And where has this “40” come from? Fear mongering by the teachers and unions? A quick google of global class sizes show India and China in the 40-50 size range. I “highly” doubt Canada will be the next China. But I can see the landscape of education changing. Because I want a choice and accountability. If the Liberal party refuses to be fiscally responsible, then my long heritage of voting Liberal stops RIGHT HERE.And is it true the salaries are being propped to 100% by the union? What is the incentive to return to work? I’d fire the whole lot of them. Maybe I can't fire them. But I can fire you.

Not to be mean but your friend can always put them in private school where it costs a lot more and then pay full tuition when they get into University... Most of the post-secondary cost of education here in Ontario is covered by the tax payers...

Working harder and doing more for less is not in the best interest of Canadians....that's a the 3rd world model.....but I certainly understand the frustration this strike is putting on students and family members.... It's too bad they can't sit down and settle this out...

If my portion of Provincial taxes paid for education was deducted from my bill I would do exactly that but people who put their kids in Private still pay for the public system also. If we were given that choice the education industry would reform itself in a couple years and the invincible teacher's union would shrivel up. Quality of education would likely improve also.
The class size issue is smoke screen. With ever decreasing enrollment fewer teachers are required and shrinking class size just protects the teacher headcount. More small classes also requires more buildings, custodians and school board people who mostly vote liberal as well as their families.
