The case has been made that a paintball gun and a pellet gun can be considered firearms under the firearms act if deemed necessary. They did this a couple years back due to the number of teenagers who were going around with paintball guns shooting people and the use of pellet pistols for crime. They allowed them to be considered firearms in this case, so they can be charged with improper storage, transportation, etc.
I have a friend who competes in paintball contests, he thought that it was insane that he had to encase his marker now, they do not even call it a gun. Another friend shoot airsoft, similar stuff there.
