The sad state of education

Obviously, there's reasons behind the actions of the teacher (if you agree with them or not) but having prostatic breasts added onto your body in a shop class is unsafe
the teacher should be reprimanded for acting in an unsafe manor in a teaching environment

My 13 year old daughter told me the other day she was very nervous of being paired with a "furry" for a science project. I honestly believe in letting people do or be what they want but when it affects other students there needs to be something done. I had every intention of calling the principal but was convinced otherwise. The next parent/teacher interview will be interesting.

Had to look up what a "furry" is, why can't people just be normal. I'm glad I'm the age I am, otherwise I'd be looking for an island.

I agree with her, and I suspect that you might too if you go back to the school you left 10 years ago. My wire has been supply teaching for a few years and the stories I hear just make my head spin. Some kid in Grade 2 had to be restrained 3 times in the same afternoon and it took 2 adults to do it - and these are regular occurrences in the schools she works at. Just about every class has kids with “safety plans” ….ie kids with behavioural problems that need special arrangements so that other kids don’t get hurt. I don’t begrudge the teachers like I used to as their jobs are getting worse and worse. When the province decided to do away with special education and put the special needs kids into the regular classrooms, it diverts much of the teachers time and NONE of the kids are getting what they need. It’s not all the fault of the education system though, we have some massive failures in PARENTING these days. Kids that live on sugar and bring nothing but sugary food to school…..no wonder they can’t sit still to focus and learn.

I don't believe the structure works anymore. Memorizing facts and then spitting them back on standardized tests is not how everyone learns. You can't honour everyone's individuality and then and then grade them with a red marking pen in the same breath. It's counter-intuitive. Also implement real-world knowledge on tests if you must, not "Susie Q had a million melons"-nonsense. Teach kids about taxes, and computer coding, and how renting cars and owning mortgages works. I'm not saying that teachers aren't valid: they have my utmost respect and a good teacher makes all the difference. I'm simply saying the system is outdated. The constant tension between provincial funding is also an issue. My university went on three strikes in the time I was pursuing my degree, one of them lasting many months. Post-secondary education should be free; students are an investment in the future of the economy. Also bring back handwriting; fluid movement when writing your thoughts is liberating.
