The apple crop up here near the Soo, is dismal to say the least. Normally I would gather up 10-12 20litre pails to use on my bait pile. This year... I managed 2 pails and had to scratch for that.
My BiL lives down near Meaford and will be coming up for Thanksgiving. Does anyone know if the local orchards down that way sell bait apples? 50lb bags? Thanks!
Tell him to try Vail's orchard market on the west side of Meaford they sell windfalls for a good price, after the wind we had on this past Fri. there should be lots, wild apples around here seem to be hit and miss, some trees are loaded and others just a few apples. Have a great crop of mountain ash berries this year, the trees are loaded.
Does that include your crab apples as well? That's all I could get around here. I'd grab them as they fell off my tree, added a bit of sugar, just a tad water and sealed the lid on 5 gallon pails. Come November you could smell them miles away.
Yep, the trees in this area are virtually empty? I was awy working this spring but I guess we had a late frost and word has it, thats the reason?Quote:

I have a source in Pefferlaw and Bancroft that both have really low numbers. I was looking at buying some and calling around to some orchards in the gta area I got the same response. $60 is great price for a crate. I was quoted $150 in Durham. I found some from a friend and will drop some carrots instead this year.
A small bag of apples scattered on top of a pile of steam rolled corn is all you need.
Apples to attract by scent for the first couple of nights.
Then corn to feed them every night after that.

When most deer feed on bait.
Try hunting without bait... you may be surprised by seeing more travelling deer during the legal day light hours
