It wasn't just the Irish!
"Between one-half and two-thirds of white immigrants to the American colonies between the 1630s and American Revolution had come under indentures.[2]"

Very common throughout the world ! Even Natives in this country took slaves from other tribes .
It wasn't just in the colonies either. My ancestors worked (slaved) in the coal mines in England. From family histories they were treated much like slaves.
Pete - You bring up an interesting thought - I was born and raised in a coal mining town - two of my uncles died in the mines in separate cave ins - in earlier times people lived in small company owned houses (some are still around in certain towns) - they bought their food in company owned stores and were completely controlled by the company - it wasn't until the union got started did things get a little better - that was after a long drawn out fight - I remember when I was a kid my dad would go to work with a group of guys carrying baseball bats because the company hired others to break any attempt to organize -
I read a number of posts on another forum from southerners - to them the battle flag has nothing to do with slavery today - it is a symbol of southern history and pride - many of them believe that the real reason the war was fought was because of states rights - not slavery - and a lot of blacks even fought under that flag - lets face it 95% of the southerners that fought and died in that war didn't have slaves and the thought that you can get so many to fight for the benefit of a few slave owners is hard to swallow - remember when you read history written by the victors it is distorted
There isn't a flag flying today that doesn't have a dark history attached to it - I say - get over it and let them fly -
Well fortunately it's been removed and the ones that still wanted to keep it up will have to get over it. So get over it.
